If "Pax" really means peace, can someone kindly buy our leaders a dictionary? Because the Pax Silica Initiative is far from achieving peace, let alone "positive development."
The people behind this agreement who quietly signed off on this project fear nothing. Their actions suggest an indifference to environmental ruin, a blindness to public protests, and a willingness to prioritize profit over public interest. When our natural resources are sucked dry over the hype of a futuristic promise, whose success is actually going to shine? Hint: it wonโt be usโordinary, hardworking Filipinos.
The Pax Silica Initiative is framed as a promised milestone for the Philippines, with New Clark City in Capas, Tarlac, as its proposed site. It carves out a massive 1,600-hectare (4,000-acre) Economic Security Zoneโproposed by the US and its alliesโto reduce Western reliance on foreign supply chains for semiconductors, critical minerals, and advanced manufacturing, all for the sake of protecting the country's interests, the environment, and its host communities.
Or is it?
If this is truly for the sake of the country, why are we submitting to a US-led coalition and sacrificing our natural assets just to drag ourselves into an escalating Cold War?
On top of that, how can they claim thereโs no environmental damage? Malacaรฑang Palace Press Officer Claire Castro asserts that it won't harm the environment, but, for comparison, the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC)โthe world's largest contract chipmakerโconsumes up to 101 million cubic meters (mยณ), or approximately 26.68 billion gallons, of water annually.
If one of the world's largest semiconductor manufacturers requires such an immense volume of water, it is only reasonable to ask how similar large-scale facilities proposed under the Pax Silica Initiative could affect the country's water resources and surrounding communities.
Moreover, the threat to local communities is already sparking outrage. On July 21, Tarlac State University students protested against the impending displacement that this project could bring, amplifying the voices of farmers and Aetas whose ancestral lands are now at risk and who may be forced to trade their rights for an uncertain future.
Finance Secretary Frederick Go recently boasted that the Philippines will benefit massively from the US-led Pax Silica Initiative, promising job creation and positioning the country as a leader in global artificial intelligence. On paper, these futuristic promises look like a major economic win following the April 16 deal. Yet a harsh reality remains: our people cannot eat money, nor can they drink digital progress in a dying country.
To be exact, we are being treated as nothing less than a tool for their empire-building initiative. We are a nation rich with immense potential, yet we are being poisoned by the very leaders who corrupt it.
Our officials didnโt negotiate progress or pursue less harmful alternativesโthey surrendered our leverage, our land, and our natural resources. After burdening Filipinos with debt and a fractured sense of identity, they now reduce us to mere collateral to appease foreign tech titans. It is a distorted bargain: foreign corporations secure profits and strategic advantages while our peopleโespecially our farmersโare left to bear the environmental, social, and economic costs.
We become a shield for foreign interests, trading our sovereignty for a technology that was meant to serve peopleโnot exploit them.
"Enough" can no longer be a whisper; it must become a war cry against the Pax Silica Initiative. To the officials who signed off on this project: stop hiding behind closed doors and selling us out under the guise of "development."
Real progress does not starve the hands that feed the nation, exploit ancestral lands, exhaust natural resources, or compromise our sovereignty in the name of modernization. A nation should never become so eager to build its future that it forgets who that future is supposed to serve.
