While it’s true that fake news is a serious problem in the Philippines, it's important to recognize that misinformation can come from many sources — not just politicians.

In the Philippines, the spread of misinformation is a real concern, and sadly, even politicians sometimes contribute to it.

For example, during the KOJC siege, President Marcos Jr. mentioned that no fi****ms were involved. However, live social media footage clearly showed police officers entering with guns, and even Toree was seen carrying a firearm.

While we respect the President’s position, public trust requires that our leaders serve as models of truthfulness. If we want to reduce the spread of fake news, it is important that all public statements, especially from top officials, are consistent with what people can clearly see and verify

VP Sara Duterte’s remark about the ₱20 rice was not meant as an insult. Her point was clear — she wants to ensure that rice sold at a low price will still be of good quality, and not something unfit for people to eat. She was not belittling the poor or the farmers.

The narrative being pushed by the opposition is clearly an attempt to gain public sympathy, especially with elections coming up. But people today are smarter and more discerning. Just because something is affordable doesn’t mean we should accept it even if it’s of poor quality. What we want is rice that is both affordable and clean, safe, and decent for everyone.

It is not VP Sara’s fault for reminding everyone that the public deserves quality service. In fact, it would be more insulting if we simply accepted dirty or low-grade goods just because they are cheap. True care for the people means making sure that even at a low price, the quality remains high.
