✨L I G I D✨
Designed by Mr. ALLEN WELCH
This costume is inspired by the karakol sa bangkaan or LIGID, which is a well-known traditional way of expressing gratitude by the people of Barangay Julugan in Tanza, Cavite, for the bountiful fish catch. It is common for the blessed image of Santa Monica, the patron saint of Barangay Julugan, to be placed on a boat during this celebration, which is typically held in the month of May.
This costume also symbolizes the love and importance of Mutya ng Julugan 8, Ms. Pauline Domol, for her barangay.
It reflects various symbols that are commonly seen in the barangay, such as the boat, which is a primary source of livelihood for the locals, and the fishing nets, which are essential tools used by the people in catching fish. At the top of the costume, there is a bilao (woven basket), which is often seen in Barangay Julugan 8. This basket is traditionally used to hold dried fish, one of the most famous products of the area.
The base of the costume is inspired by a mermaid, a common character in the local folklore of a neighboring barangay called Mandaragat.
On the back of the costume, the beautiful image of Santa Monica is depicted to highlight the charm of the Fiesta sa Bangkaan, a celebration that we hope will not only be known in this town but across the Philippines. We believe that this is one of the best ways to show our gratitude for the blessings we receive.
Indeed, this LIGID national costume is a true representation not only of the beauty of Julugan 8 but also of the story of its people, their livelihood, culture, traditions, products, and the love they have for their barangay.
