Here’s the latest update on Tropical Storm Crising (international name: Wipha) as of July 19, 2025:

🌪️ Current Status

Moving away from Northern Luzon, over the Luzon Strait, at ~25 km/h WNW. Expected to exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility this morning or early afternoon, likely heading toward southern China or nearby waters .

Maximum sustained winds: ~85 km/h, gusts up to ~105–115 km/h .

Forecast to intensify into a Severe Tropical Storm later today before weakening as it approaches land near southern China .

⚠️ Warnings & Hazards

Wind Signals

Signal No. 2 (gale-force winds possible) remains over northern Luzon – including parts of Cagayan, Babuyan Islands, Ilocos Norte, Apayao, Abra .

Signal No. 1 covers lower-risk areas yet still experiencing gusty conditions.

Sea & Coastal Conditions

Gale warnings remain for northern/eastern seaboards of Northern Luzon. Seas are very rough (4.5–6 m) over Batanes and Babuyan Islands; rough to very rough (3–4.5 m) elsewhere .

Mariners are strongly advised to stay in port .

Rainfall & Flood Risk

Heavy to torrential rains (100–200 mm or more) are affecting northern Luzon – especially Cagayan, Apayao, Ilocos — causing flooding and landslide risks; moderate to heavy rainfall (50–100 mm) in Cordillera, Metro Manila, Central & Southern Luzon .

Southwest Monsoon (Habagat), intensified by Crising, is causing additional heavy rains and flooding risks across Palawan, Visayas, Metro Manila, and CALABARZON .

Storm Surge

Risk of 1–2 m storm surge in exposed coastal communities of Batanes, Babuyan Islands, Cagayan, and Ilocos regions .

📌 What You Should Do

Follow advisories from PAGASA, NDRRMC, and local government units, particularly in affected areas.

🚤 Sea travel is unsafe – all vessels are advised to remain in port.

Prepare for possible flooding and landslides— gather emergency supplies, secure belongings, charge devices, and identify evacuation routes.

Stay alert during heavy rains and avoid flood-prone zones.

⏳ Outlook (Next 24–48 Hours)

Storm will continue moving west-northwest, likely exiting PAR today, but regional rainfall and monsoon effects will persist until at least Monday .

After exiting, storm is expected to weaken, though flooding and dangerous seas will linger in affected regions.

✅ Summary

Crising is weakening and expected to leave PAR shortly—but its impacts linger: strong winds, heavy rainfall, rough seas, coastal surge, and landslide and flood risks remain high, especially in northern and central Luzon, Batanes, and Babuyan Islands. Stay weather-aware, avoid risky travel, and prioritize safety.

Editorial: The Vanishing Sabungeros – A Crisis of Justice and Accountability

The case of the missing sabungeros in the Philippines is more than just a sensational crime story—it is a chilling testament to the state of law enforcement, justice, and human rights in our country.

For years now, dozens of men involved in online and live cockfighting have simply disappeared. Mothers, wives, children, and siblings continue to wait in agony for answers. They cling to hope, even as time—and government action—seems to stand still.

What is most disturbing about these disappearances is the implication of systemic failure and possible police involvement. CCTV footage in some cases showed men being abducted brazenly in broad daylight, or led away by people allegedly in uniform. Yet despite Senate hearings, police investigations, and presidential pronouncements, no one has been held truly accountable.

How can this happen in a country that prides itself on family values, rule of law, and democracy? The brutal truth is that we allow it when we turn a blind eye. When the authorities fail to resolve these cases, it sends a message: life is cheap, and justice can be denied if you are poor or powerless.

We must ask: Why is there so little urgency? Is it because the victims are sabungeros—a group often stereotyped as gamblers and troublemakers? Does society’s prejudice make it easier to dismiss them as disposable?

Let us be clear: regardless of lifestyle or occupation, these men are citizens with rights. Their families deserve answers. And we, as a nation, deserve a justice system that actually works.

We call on the Philippine National Police, the Department of Justice, and our lawmakers: Treat this as the crisis it is. Prioritize these cases. Pursue leads without fear or favor. Protect whistleblowers and witnesses. Charge and convict the guilty, whether they wear civilian clothes or police uniforms.

If the government cannot guarantee the safety of its people, it fails in its most basic duty.

These missing sabungeros are not just names on a list. They are fathers, brothers, and sons. Their disappearances stain our national conscience. We must demand truth, accountability, and above all, justice—before more lives vanish into silence.

EDITORIAL: A Politician’s Conflict of Interest Betrays the Public Trust

WHEN an elected official uses their power to benefit their own business or family, it’s not merely unethical—it’s a betrayal of public trust. Recently, Councilor Reyes voted to approve a lucrative city contract for a company owned by his cousin. Though he insists he did nothing wrong, the conflict of interest is obvious.

Public office is meant to serve the people, not private pockets. Even the appearance of bias damages confidence in government. Voters expect decisions to be made fairly and transparently, free from personal gain. By ignoring this principle, Councilor Reyes has undermined the integrity of the council.

The solution is clear: stricter disclosure rules, mandatory recusals in cases of conflict, and real consequences for violations. Our community deserves leaders who prioritize the common good over self-interest. Until we hold politicians accountable, corruption will continue to flourish, and citizens will lose faith in the very institutions meant to represent them.
