NEWS: LGUs urged to provide gadgets instead of cash aid
In an effort to ensure the smooth implementation of flexible learning for the coming school year, Tarlac State University (TSU) sought the support of the 3rd District Local Government Units (LGUs) and Cong. Noel Villanueva in its final consultative meeting at the Main AVR, TSU Main Campus today.
Instead of scholarship grants, Dr. Myrna Q. Mallari, university president, encouraged Cong. Villanueva and Mayors to provide gadgets and improved e-learning tools that students can use for distance learning amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
“TSU can deliver quality education; we have the capability to deliver quality education. Ang problema po ay ang mga estudyante natin. Paano po tayo magtutulungan para sa kanila?” Mallari stated.
She also emphasized the university’s need for help from LGUs in encouraging the students in their respective municipalities to enroll as TSU aims to administer a more inclusive and flexible means of learning.
Cong. Noel L. Villanueva, District Representative of Tarlac, expressed his concerns towards the methods of delivering flexible learning for technical courses that could not be held online, such as engineering.
“How can we find means to deliver flexible learning in higher education? How could we meet these challenges and demands? Paano natin mabibigay ang pangangailangan ng mga estudyante natin?” Villanueva asked.
To address this concern, Concepcion, Tarlac Mayor Andy Lacson explained that they are planning on producing a digital classroom in their municipality.
“Plano po namin sa Concepcion na gumawa ng digital classroom sa munisipyo: sa Matrimonial Hall, Session Hall, and sports complex. Ang mga digital classroom ay may screen, headset, at few sets of laptops. Ang mga basketball courts ay nakaplano na rin na lagyan ng WiFi connection.”
Meanwhile, Mayor Reynaldo Catacutan of Capas and Mayor Venus Jordan of La Paz also shared that they are partnering with Converge and Smart respectively as internet service providers for the basketball courts and gymnasiums in their area.
