WVSU ICT Director Inspires CCIS Students to Harness AI for Community Empowerment

The College of Computing and Information Sciences (CCIS) formally opened its Culminating Program and Academic Awarding Ceremony with an inspiring and insightful keynote address delivered by Dr. Rosie Jane P. Siosan, Director of the School of Information and Communications Technology of West Visayas State University Pototan Campus.

Anchored on the theme, “Embracing Artificial Intelligence Towards Empowered Individuals and Empowered Communities,” the event gathered students, faculty members, and guests in a celebration of academic excellence, innovation, and technological advancement.

In her keynote message, Dr. Siosan emphasized the transformative role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in shaping the future of education, work, and society. She discussed how AI has become a powerful tool that can assist individuals in improving productivity, enhancing creativity, solving complex problems, and opening new opportunities across various industries.

Dr. Siosan encouraged students to view AI not merely as a technological trend but as a resource that can help them become empowered individuals capable of making informed decisions, adapting to change, and continuously learning in an increasingly digital world. She highlighted the importance of developing critical thinking, creativity, communication skills, and ethical responsibility alongside technological competence.

Beyond personal development, the speaker also underscored the role of students as future leaders and innovators who can utilize technology to address community needs. She challenged participants to think beyond individual success and consider how AI-driven solutions can contribute to improving education, healthcare, governance, business, and social services within their communities.

One of the highlights of the session was Dr. Siosan’s engaging and interactive presentation style. Rather than delivering a traditional lecture, she actively involved students through thought-provoking questions, real-life scenarios, and discussions about emerging technologies. Participants enthusiastically responded to her questions, shared their insights, and reflected on how AI could be applied in their respective fields and future careers.

The lively interaction created an atmosphere of excitement and curiosity, encouraging students to become active contributors to the conversation rather than passive listeners. The audience's participation reflected their growing interest in the opportunities and challenges presented by artificial intelligence.

Faculty members and students alike appreciated the practical insights and motivational messages shared during the talk. Many participants noted that the session deepened their understanding of AI and inspired them to become more proactive in using technology for both personal growth and community development.
