LTO Expands Ban on E-Bikes and E-Trikes on Major Highways

MANILA, Philippines — The Land Transportation Office (LTO) announced that starting this week, more major highways will be included in the restriction on electric bicycles and electric tricycles.

In addition to EDSA, C-5 Road, Roxas Boulevard, and the portion of Quirino Avenue linking Magallanes to the South Luzon Expressway (SLEX), the ban will now cover Commonwealth Avenue and Quezon Avenue in Quezon City, as well as Marcos Highway and Sumulong Highway. This was confirmed by LTO chief Markus Lacanilao.

Lacanilao said enforcement will intensify as classes and work resume, warning that LTO personnel may already issue violation tickets and impound e-bikes and e-trikes found traveling on these roads.

During the first day of enforcement last Friday, authorities apprehended 67 e-bike and e-trike users on EDSA and another 30 along Quirino Avenue. Violators may face fines of ₱1,000 for causing traffic obstruction and ₱1,500 for riding without a helmet, among other penalties.

The LTO also cautioned that minors operating e-bikes and e-trikes could have their vehicles confiscated, with parents or guardians held responsible. Even e-trikes authorized by local government units are advised to avoid national highways.

However, Lacanilao clarified that two-wheeled e-bikes with lower power output and weighing less than 50 kilograms are still permitted to use designated bicycle lanes on highways such as EDSA and Commonwealth Avenue and are not covered by the ban.

The LTO explained that the restriction, based on Republic Act 4136 or the Land Transportation and Traffic Code, along with Joint Administrative Order 2014-01, is intended to direct e-bikes and e-trikes to inner roads and improve overall road safety for motorists.

Cebu South Bus Terminal to Close Temporarily for Sinulog 2026

In preparation for the upcoming Sinulog Festival, Cebu City officials have proposed the temporary closure of the Cebu South Bus Terminal (CSBT) on Sunday, January 18, 2026. The move is part of the city’s traffic and transport management plan for the annual religious and cultural celebration.
City Councilor Dave Tumulak, a member of the executive committee of Sinulog Foundation Inc., explained that the plan is intended to ease traffic congestion, organize public transportation, and allocate parking spaces for government officials and emergency vehicles. These measures are especially focused on areas surrounding the Cebu City Sports Center (CCSC) and nearby roads.
The city has formally requested approval from Governor Pamela Baricuatro to temporarily relocate southbound bus operations to the South Road Properties (SRP) El Pardo/Industrial Road area, starting at 3:00 a.m. on January 18. The temporary arrangement will remain in effect until all Sinulog activities have concluded.

🚨 PCG Reports Chinese suspected Rocket Debris Found in Sulu Waters

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) confirmed that an object believed to be rocket debris was discovered floating in the waters near Pangutaran, Sulu on December 30.
The PCG said a local fisherman recovered the object and brought it near Barangay Suang Bunah. Although early reports did not specify any identifying marks, images later released by the agency appear to show symbols resembling the Chinese flag on the debris.
At present, the recovered material remains under the care of Barangay Suang Bunah, while the Coast Guard Station Western Sulu continues to coordinate with local officials for its possible turnover to the PCG for further examination and proper disposal.
The Philippine Coast Guard has advised the public to report any unfamiliar or suspicious objects found at sea to authorities to help ensure public safety.
