President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., in his recent State of the Nation Address (SONA), announced the nationwide expansion of the ₱20-per-kilo rice program. After its successful implementation in parts of Visayas and Mindanao, the program is set to be launched in Luzon with the goal of reaching the entire country.

Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu-Laurel Jr. confirmed that by next year, the program aims to benefit 15 million households, equivalent to around 60 million Filipinos. He assured the public of the program’s sustainability, noting that an additional ₱10 billion will be allocated in the national budget to support its expansion.

As part of this effort, the government also plans to purchase rice directly from local farmers, ensuring support for the agriculture sector while providing affordable rice to Filipino families.

Cebu Technological University (CTU)–Tuburan Campus, with its ongoing implementation of Phase 3 of its extension program titled “Electricity Decarbonization Program: Harnessing the Sun’s Power Through Sustainable Community Cooperation,” finally completed the installation of five solar panels at Barangay Alegria.

The project aimed to make renewable energy accessible and affordable by promoting clean energy solutions using solar panels. It was designed for the community to benefit, particularly those in rural areas where access to electricity remained limited, especially during calamities. The program followed a four-phase framework: educate, initiate, implement, and sustain.

The initiative was backed by the university’s Bachelor of Science in Information Technology, Bachelor in Industrial Technology, and Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering, and was carried out in partnership with the Alegria Farmers Agriculture Cooperative. Spearheaded by Engr. Naomi Asendiente Bajao, in collaboration with Prof. Victor Patindol, Engr. Fernando Mangubat Jr., Prof. Siegfried Mendoza, Dr. Paul James Tamayo, Engr. Ramon Conejos, Prof. Sergio Magpuyo, Prof. Jae-an Buhia, and other faculty members of the College of Technology, this phase aims to harvest solar energy and convert it to usable 100 kW electrical energy by end of this year.

Barangay Alegria was selected as the project site due to its significant number of farmers and the continuing challenge of sustainable energy access in the area. The complete installation of mini solar panels was expected to contribute to global decarbonization efforts, strengthen climate resilience, and empower the local community through skills training and collective participation.
