Frances Xavier Cabrini, originally named Maria Francesca Cabrini, was born on July 15, 1850, in Lombardy, Italy. She was the youngest of thirteen children, though only three siblings lived into adulthood. Despite her weak health, Frances was determined to join religious life. When the Daughters of the Sacred Heart declined her due to her frailty, she dedicated herself to teaching at an orphanage. Her passion led her to establish the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart, focusing on helping impoverished children.

Frances successfully founded multiple institutions in Italy, and Pope Leo XIII called on her to support Italian immigrants in the United States. She arrived in New York City on March 31, 1889. Facing initial challenges, she persevered and opened an orphanage in West Park, New York. Her efforts expanded as she went on to create 67 institutions across the nation, providing vital services to the needy and assisting Italian immigrants.

In 1909, Frances became a naturalized U.S. citizen. She passed away on December 22, 1917. Her remains are honored in various places, with her head kept in Rome and most of her body in New York.

Known for her unwavering faith, creativity, and commitment to charity, Frances was beatified in 1938 and canonized in 1946. She holds the distinction of being the first U.S. citizen to be canonized a saint. Frances Xavier Cabrini is celebrated as the patron saint of immigrants, and her feast day is observed on November 13.
