Amidst the gloomy skies because of the rain, empty blue water jugs wearing a red cross t-shirt were spotted at the Tuguegarao Science High School (TCSHS) Mini gym yesterday. Despite the gloomy grey atmosphere, the blue colored water jugs were fixed into position, which made the mini event gather attention from students passing by.
Vanet L. Viloria the Chapter Service Representative took charge of the event and stared directly at the crowd with one objective in mind, which was to promote public awareness and encourage every Filipino to learn lifesaving CPR skills, and Tugscie became one of their stops along the journey. This day was a highlight of their beliefs in the message that anyone can save a life. And starting small but essential, is the objective to explain the correct way of doing CPR.
Behind the scenes, the team shared their rigorous preparation to ensure an informative but interactive training experience for beginners. Sleepless nights and countless hours of coordination with the school checking for vacant time. Tired eyes and endless coffee supplies just to search for clear, easy-to-follow demonstrations and lesson plans where every student can follow with ease. They are able to absorb and apply the knowledge in real situations and not just another lesson to be tossed aside and forgotten.
With eyes gleaming with curiosity and hands itching to try, it was time to apply the new skill-set to the test. Like a real life simulation, voices of concern were made towards the mannequin asking for their condition. If there was no response, a pulse was checked and assistance was searched. What happened next were a series of hands that were interlocked, with the non-dominant hand over the other as the countdown started. Every pressure applied was met with a first time compression, untrained and uneven but in sync to every beat just like the heart.
Listening to the takeaways from fellow Tugsciers such as Steven Jade B. Casirayan who said, โThe experience was very memorable, I learnt that performing CPR is very crucial to saving someone's life and if you make one mistake it could make someone lose their life.โ And Sian Kaithlynn Cabonce, โI felt excited and nervous, but most importantly relieved because I get to learn how to save others from possible hardships when a cardiac arrest occurs.โ Can give glimpses of how the Red Crossโs National CPR day event changed the mindset of these witnesses.
Moreover, not only were the students expressive of this encounter but the hosts also have feedback to share, โAt Tugscie, the CPR caravan was met with great enthusiasm and active participation. Students and teachers alike paid close attention to every demonstration, listened intently to clear instructions, and eagerly took their turn practicing on training mannequins.โ
With the Red Crossโs visit to Tugscie, valuable lessons were learned. CPR was a first aid skillset not to be taken lightly. It takes the right amount of compression, pressure, and synchronization to the beat of the heart to let the oxygen flow between each blood vessel like a rush down an empty street. Within todayโs highlights, the National CPR day finished in hues of commitment and memories of witnesses opening a flow, creating open paths for oxygen to reach across different parts of our human body.
