Metro Manila and Cebu City, Philippines — The Department of Environment and Natural Resources – Mines and Geosciences Bureau (DENR-MGB) has deployed an eight-member team of geologists, consisting of six from the Central Office and two from Regional Office VII, to conduct a comprehensive Post-Disaster Geohazards Assessment across several areas in Cebu Province. The assessment aims to identify zones susceptible to flooding, rain-induced landslides, ground subsidence, and sinkhole formation.

The initiative aims to enhance public safety and guide local government units (LGUs) in land-use planning and disaster risk reduction, particularly in communities situated on karst terrains characterized by limestone formations that are prone to dissolution and collapse.

According to Assistant Secretary for Mining Concerns and concurrent OIC Director Engr. Michael V. Cabalda, the assessment involves ground validation and geohazards data analysis. “This study will enable us to pinpoint areas susceptible to flooding, rain-induced landslides, and those areas with high potential for ground subsidence and provide technical recommendations to LGUs for proper zoning, building regulation, and emergency preparedness,” the Engr. Cabalda said.

The ASEAN Mineral Awards (AMA) is a prestigious, biennial award established to honor mining and minerals processing companies throughout the region that have made outstanding contributions toward the promotion of environmentally and socially sustainable minerals development. Contested across six distinct categories—Best Practices in Mining, Processing, and Distribution for both Metallic and Non-Metallic minerals (excluding coal, oil, and gas)—the AMA is a key initiative to improve the industry's initiatives and disseminate best practices. Entries are rigorously evaluated by a regional Board of Judges from all ten ASEAN Member States based on comprehensive criteria that weigh Impacts (on community development, human resources, and supply), Sustainability (health, safety, and environmental performance), and the Replicability and Originality of the solutions demonstrated.

Quezon City, Metro Manila – The Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB), as spearheaded by the Lands Geological Survey Division (LGSD), has recently launched an pioneering web application that seeks to automate preliminary sinkhole detection as a tool to support the Bureau’s karst subsidence susceptibility mapping, especially during post-disaster geohazards assessments. The application, that is currently being tested in the Central Visayas region, integrates manual digitization and automated geospatial analysis of available satellite data.

The manual digitization component entails the identification of sinkholes using the 1:50,000-scale Topographic Maps of the National Mapping and Resource Information Authority (NAMRIA) to establish a baseline and facilitate cross-referencing with the results of automated analyses. Meanwhile, the automated process analyzes available Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) and satellite images to delineate potential sinkholes and detect ground movement through changes in topography as well as ground deformation. The workflow established to generate preliminary sink depth maps for MGB’s karst subsidence susceptibility assessment are used as reference.

The outputs generated are initially screened to filter out non-geological anomalies (e.g., man-made features) and are further evaluated by MGB Geologists during field validation. This application is seen to reduce the processing time for initial sinkhole detection during emergency hazard assessments and, consequently, aid in a more efficient mapping of karst subsidence due to sinkhole collapse.

MANDAUE CITY, CEBU — Geologists from the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) have convened with officials from the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) Region 7 and the Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development (DHSUD) to finalize preparations for a comprehensive post-disaster geohazards assessment in earthquake-affected areas across Cebu Province. The primary focus of this joint effort is the critical evaluation of proposed sites for temporary evacuation centers and tent camps to ensure the safety and long-term security of displaced residents.

The collaborative meeting, held on October 3, 2025, marks a pivotal step in the ongoing response and recovery operations following the recent earthquake. The MGB team, comprising expert geologists from both the MGB Central and Regional Office 7 will provide crucial geohazard assessments of the areas identified by local government units (LGUs) as potential temporary shelter sites.

The MGB's technical recommendations will be vital in guiding the OCD and DHSUD in their decision-making process, ensuring that temporary shelters are not inadvertently established in areas that pose an unacceptable risk to the affected population.

Asst. Secretary Michael V. Cabalda emphasized the MGB’s commitment, stating, "Our priority is to apply sound geologic science to minimize the risk to our fellow Filipinos. By working closely with the OCD and DHSUD, we can guarantee that all recovery and rehabilitation efforts—starting with the temporary evacuation sites—are grounded in safety and disaster resilience."
