Our Prayer for the PTERO in Cebu

I cannot fully tell how things have been under the Lordโ€™s sovereignty. Yet, on the one hand, it may be the enemy seeking to frustrate, especially with the upcoming PTERO in Cebu. Still, I trust that even in this, the Lord is working out His purpose.

In God's church there is the eldership. Among God's workers there is the leadership. Many people think that these positions are determined by age and gift, but they are not determined by age or gift. They are determined by a man's consecration before God. The amount of consecration we maintain before God determines the degree of the manifestation of our position before Him. This manifestation is our only qualification to take the lead among the churches or the workers. Those who are willing to pay the price to deal with themselves will find that others have less of a need to deal with them. If we have God's light, we can take the lead and others will follow us; they will not rebel. Even though everyone has handed himself over, everyone's spiritual condition is different. If we are willing to cut ourselves deeper, the life that flows out will be richer, and others will receive more supply from us.

The extent to which we hand ourselves over will be the extent of the riches we receive from God. It will also be the extent to which we can render direction and help to others. J. N. Darby was an Anglican minister in 1825. By 1827 he gave up his clergy robe, and by 1831 he forsook all to follow the Lord. His obedience opened the floodgate to God's light. After him Kelly also forsook all to follow the Lord. When I was young, I received much help from Miss Groves who also forsook everything to follow the Lord. Today we should not broaden the narrow gate. We should not be like the Pharisees, who closed off the gate to the kingdom of the heavens, yet they would not go in themselves and would not allow others to go in either (Matt. 23:13).

We should be tender in our feelings. We should always stand on the ground of a learner. If spiritual authority is not on our shoulder, we should be humble to learn all the more. Isaiah prophesied of our Lord's time on earth, saying that He had the tongue of the instructed (50:4). How humble the Lord was! He did not stand on the ground of a teacher. He did not speak His own words but the Father's word (John 14:10, 24). We have to learn from the Lord's example. When we speak, we should say that we are not speaking from ourselves, but we are quoting Brother So-and-so.

What makes many (majority of the believers) heart grow cold is "the multiplication of lawlessness". Ohh how we truly need the grace in which we stand(Rom.5:2a). This grace reigns through righteousness (Rom.5:21).
๐Ÿ“šRom.5:21, note 2
Righteousness is the footing, the base, and the means for God to dispense Himself to us as grace. This righteousness gives us the ground to claim Christ as our grace. By giving grace to us, God manifests His righteousness (see Rom. 1:17). Furthermore, the power of this grace operates in us and produces subjective righteousness, making us right with God, with others, and even with ourselves; and it not only subdues sin but also overcomes Satan and death in our being. Thus grace reigns through righteousness, resulting in eternal life.

Today, a believer no longer needs to attend concerts or enter movie houses to partake in lawlessness. Lawlessness is now within reachโ€”just a single touch on a digital screen. If one desires his heart to grow cold, let him spend more time on social media with his mobile device than in musing on Godโ€™s sanctifying Word. It is a bold choice: the mobile device or the Bible. The former will make your heart grow cold, but the latter will cause it to endureโ€”burning, steadfast, and faithful in His faithfulness until the end. It is that simple, undeniable truth. We cannot partake of His overcoming and reigning grace apart from His Word of life.

๐Ÿ“–Psa. 119:15
"I will muse upon Your precepts
And regard Your ways."

๐Ÿ“šPsa.119:15, note 1
Rich in meaning, the Hebrew word for muse (often translated meditate in the KJV) implies to worship, to converse with oneself, and to speak aloud. To muse on the word is to taste and enjoy it through careful considering. Prayer, speaking to oneself, and praising the Lord may also be included in musing on the word. To muse on the word of God is to enjoy His word as His breath (2 Tim. 3:16) and thus to be infused with God, to breathe God in, and to receive spiritual nourishment.

๐— ๐˜‚๐˜€๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด

Good prayer often does not need many words. At times we do not need to say anything when we pray. We can simply muse on God. He cares for our musing. Psalm 104:34 says, โ€œMay my musing be sweet to Him.โ€ Prayers in which we continually speak to God may not be good prayers. In good prayer we behold God and muse upon Him.

We may think that musing is something of our mind, but it is actually connected to our spirit. We actively muse upon the attributes of our God in our spirit. He is fine, tender, careful, dignified, glorious, and great. We muse upon His dealings with us and His promises to us. As we muse, our inner being is filled with much feeling. Our musings are prayers, and at the same time they are not prayers. They are like words, yet they are not like words. They are thoughts that arise from our inner being and are a delight to God.

In summary, we should turn to our spirit to touch God in prayer. These prayers do not require many words. Sometimes it is best to spend some time to look at God or remain silent in His presence. We should learn to pray in this way. We should never pray with our own burdens; rather, we should set aside our burdens. We should say, โ€œLord, I give all my burdens to You and come to You with an unloaded spirit.โ€ We should be calm, turn to our spirit, and behold Him. We should then pray according to the inward sense. As we pray, we should continue to behold Him. We should also wait and muse on Him. If we do this, we will touch and absorb God richly through prayer.

Forty years ago in Shanghai, a sister inquired of Brother Watchman Nee, โ€œBrother Nee, I have a poor memory. I immediately forget whatever I read from the Bible. It seems to me that I do not need to read the Bible, because the words of the Bible just come and go. Is it not a waste of time for me to read the Bible?โ€ Brother Nee gave this sister a very good answer. He described how the women in southern China wash their rice by placing it in a basket made of willow branches, which serves as a strainer. They repeatedly dip the basket into the water and pull it out, and the water immediately flows out. Thus, the water comes and goes, but no water remains in the basket. No one would say that this method does not work because no water remains. Actually, because all the water comes and goes, all the dirt is washed away. Not only is the rice washed, but the basket is cleansed as well. Brother Nee shared that we are like these baskets, and the word of God is like the water. We cannot retain every verse in our memory, but we nevertheless receive a great benefit from reading the Word and being cleansed by the water in the word (Eph. 5:26).

This fellowship from Brother Nee has been a great help to me, and I can testify from my experience that it is true. If we do not come to the Word of God for one week, our thinking, our will, and our emotion will be very dirty spiritually. However, if we read the Bible day by day, even if we have no intention to be cleansed, the word will spontaneously pass through our mind, our emotion, and our will to cleanse all our inward parts. As the water of the word comes and goes, we will be cleansed. We can never exhaust the benefits we receive from reading the Word.

In my younger years, I was obsessed with the idea of one day becoming either a senator or a congressman. Back in Ateneo de Davao University (ADDU), I took a law subject under Ms. Sobrevega. Many male students often withdrew from her class because of her straightforward way of gradingโ€”you would simply get the grade you truly deserved, even if it was a failing 30. But I was challenged. I chose to take her class, sat in the front row, and embraced the difficulty.

With that motivation, fueled by my ambition to stand in the august chambers one day, I worked hard and eventually passed her subject with one of my best grades. Yet as I now watch the current deliberations and proceedings in both the lower and upper chambers, the Lord confronted me, as if saying:

In that moment, I bowed my head and prayed: โ€œ๐™‡๐™ค๐™ง๐™™, ๐™›๐™ค๐™ง๐™œ๐™ž๐™ซ๐™š ๐™ข๐™š ๐™›๐™ค๐™ง ๐™›๐™ž๐™ก๐™ก๐™ž๐™ฃ๐™œ ๐™ข๐™ฎ ๐™๐™š๐™–๐™ง๐™ฉ ๐™ฌ๐™ž๐™ฉ๐™ ๐™ซ๐™–๐™ฃ๐™ž๐™ฉ๐™ฎ ๐™–๐™ฃ๐™™ ๐™˜๐™๐™–๐™จ๐™ž๐™ฃ๐™œ ๐™–๐™›๐™ฉ๐™š๐™ง ๐™ฉ๐™๐™š ๐™ž๐™™๐™ž๐™ค๐™˜๐™ง๐™–๐™˜๐™ฎ ๐™ค๐™› ๐™ข๐™š๐™ฃ.โ€ -A. The rampant corruption in our government and the chaos raging in both politics and society are but a glimpse, a foreshadowing, a harbinger of the perilous times prophesied by the apostle Paul in 2 Timothy 3:1โ€“6. What we see today is the darkest and most evil expression of these last daysโ€”an age where ungodliness and corruption pulse through government, politics, and commerce alike;

๐Ÿ“–2 Tim. 3:1
But know this, that in the last days difficult times will come.
๐Ÿ“–2 Tim. 3:2
For men will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boasters, arrogant, revilers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,
๐Ÿ“–2 Tim. 3:3
Without natural affection, implacable, slanderers, without self-control, savage, not lovers of good,
๐Ÿ“–2 Tim. 3:4
Traitors, reckless, blinded with pride, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God,
๐Ÿ“–2 Tim. 3:5
Having an outward form of godliness, though denying its power; from these also turn away.
๐Ÿ“–2 Tim. 3:6
For of these are those who creep into houses and take captive silly women heaped with sins, who are led by various desires.

But take heart: only Christ, through His government and His kingdom, will bring these evil days to an end. Until His glorious return, peace will remain elusive, for Christ alone is, and forever shall be, the Prince of Peace. His coming theocratic reign will finally overthrow this corrupt age and usher in righteousness that endures ( Daniel 2:34-35, 45). -A.S.
