LOOK: SCIENTISTS DISCOVER “GWADA NEGATIVE” — A BLOOD TYPE FOUND IN ONLY ONE PERSON ON EARTH

In a medical discovery straight out of science fiction, French scientists have identified a brand-new blood type found in just one living person — a 68-year-old woman from Guadeloupe.

Named “Gwada negative”, this ultra-rare blood type is now officially recognized as the 48th human blood group system in the world. According to researchers, the woman’s immune system rejects every known donor type, making her a one-of-a-kind case: she can only receive her own blood.

The discovery was made by France’s national blood agency, Établissement Français du Sang (EFS), and announced at the International Society of Blood Transfusion (ISBT) Congress in Milan. “We had never seen anything like it,” said lead biologist Thierry Peyrard. “She is the only person in the world who can get along with herself.”

The case first baffled doctors in 2011 during routine pre-surgery blood tests in Paris. Her blood triggered reactions to all known types, even rare ones — and no match could be found. Years later, with new genome sequencing, scientists discovered a mutation in the PIGZ gene, inherited from both parents, that radically alters how red blood cells bind with proteins.

This genetic twist means that any transfusion from another person would be fatal. She is only eligible for autologous transfusions — using her own stored blood.

The blood group, nicknamed after Guadeloupe’s slang term “Gwada,” has scientists now searching donor banks across the Caribbean. So far, no match has been found.

This discovery isn’t just a medical marvel — it could save lives by preventing deadly transfusion mismatches and uncovering hidden blood mutations in rare patients worldwide.
