Students from the School of Accountancy, Management, Computing, and Information Studies (SAMCIS) successfully secured the first runner up at the FUSION 2025: Case Conquest hosted by the Junior Entrepreneursโ Marketing Association (JEMA) of De La Salle University (DLSU) that started last July 12 and concluded on August 2, 2025.
The competing team, Amalgam, consists of Mark Lestat Agustin, Dylan Yeoj Magpili, Lou Diamond Morados, Liam Jiro Morales, and Gebreyl Isaac Rabang from BS Computer Science (BSCS).
In an initial interview with Morales, he shared that they joined the said contest to test themselves, โWe joined initially to see how far we could go and what we could achieve with no prior experience in marketing at all. We also wanted to get a grasp of the marketing landscape as a whole, because we understood the power of marketing, especially the role it plays in pushing innovation technology further. In order to come up with solutions, we need to understand who the clients are and in this case we wanted to challenge ourselves by providing a computer science solution to a marketing problem.โ
The hybrid competition has three key phases โ Onboarding Session, Mentorship Session, and The Finals. The first phase is the introduction of the case and orientation regarding the preliminary submission, the second phase provides the shortlisted teams guidance by experts such as company representatives and experienced case competition participants, and the last phase is where the top five teams present their solution to judges.
โIt was a rollercoaster, really. We found out that we got selected for the finals in the middle of our internship which really was a shock to us since we didn't expect we would be getting in the finals. Our idea was really a eureka moment a day before the preliminary submission deadline. Placing that high on the finals also shocked us. We were a fraction close to being champion, with a 0.1% score difference from achieving it. The team felt a mix of thrill and a bit wanting more, because we thought we left something on the table,โ Morales recounts when asked about the experience.
He further added, โWe had the opportunity to be mentored by Globe's leaders, and one thing struck us the most, storytelling. We incorporated this one aspect in our pitch to make ourselves stand out and we believe this effort was rewarded. The main takeaway we had from the entire event was that in order to get your point across effectively and efficiently, you need to make it into a story, make it relatable and honest. People understand ideas easier if they can visualize.โ
The event aims to solve real-world problems from their partner company, Globe Telecom, to challenge the participantsโ critical thinking, creativity, and business acumen.
