A long-standing cycle of extreme poverty doesnโ€™t turn humans into villainsโ€”but it can push them into choices they wouldnโ€™t make under better circumstances. When we are caught in its poison, survival becomes a daily challenge. However, in the battle of lethal scarcity, where morality is sometimes the first casualty, accountability is still crucialโ€”not to punish, but to understand our actions.

Central Mindanao University (CMU) has been a beacon of academic excellence. However, it has also been involved with land conflict with the BUFFALO-TAMARAW-LIMUS (BTL) and the Musuan Inhabitants Landless Farmers Association (MILFA) groups. While these lands lawfully belong to the university, these groups have taken up residence in the area. On June 16, 2025, the demolition of the huts within Field One began. This was in accordance with the Writ of Demolition issued by the Regional Trial Court, Branch 45, based on the final judgments affirming CMUโ€™s forcible entry case. Furthermore, the demolition was carried out by the Sheriffโ€™s Office in coordination with the Philippine National Police and Armed Forces of the Philippines.

The demolition of the MILFA and BTLโ€™s structures was a necessary act by the institution to protect its land and resources. The settlers had been informed of their illegal occupation. They were given official notices, opportunities for dialogue, and considerable time. CMU had the legal right to reclaim its property. The universityโ€™s land is intended to serve the public through free and quality education, research, and community developmentโ€”functions that benefit society and future generations. Allowing unlawful structures to remain on its premises could weaken its institutional authority and limit space for academic expansion.

Nevertheless, to label illegal squatting as selfish is to ignore the realities of the marginalized. It is often born out of a brutal fight for survival. Though informed, many of the settlers stayedโ€”a decision made because leaving wasnโ€™t an easy option; it was rooted in complex realities. A lack of empathy only perpetuates the cycle of poverty we aim to break.

In the ruins of demolished shanties lay water containers, blankets, clothes, and a hangerโ€”proof that there were once lives built there, and dreams founded upon hope. Behind every shanty is a storyโ€”of parents trying to build a future for their children, of children dreaming of better circumstances. There were families. It wasnโ€™t just about illegal squatting; it also manifests survival amid the agony of povertyโ€”especially the kind that hinders the underprivileged from even meeting their basic needs. This reflects the nature and consistent pattern of informal settlement.

For many informal settlers, the demolition does not simply strip them of shelter; it erases identity and dignity. They are uprooted from their routines, and entire families from the only sense of community theyโ€™ve ever known. Whatโ€™s left behind are the kinds of wounds people donโ€™t seeโ€”fear, shame, helplessness, and the heavy feeling of not knowing what to do nor where to go next. The pain lingers long even after the demolition ends.

While we can empathize with their situation, accountability must still meet reality. While empathy delayed action for some time, it could not hold so forever. Poverty is a weight that many carryโ€”and it challenges not only those who endure it, but also the conscience of society. As the university fulfills its duty to protect its land, it is equally important to make room for both accountability and humanity to thrive. Justice is firm and fair, but it should always walk hand in hand with peace and respect.

The true measure of society will not be found in the buildings constructed nor the lands reclaimed, but in how they treat those pushed to the edges of society. The aim is not to be remembered for the ruins left behind, but for the lives that are protected. The land may belong to CMU, but the future belongs to everyone.

After successive rounds of intellectual exchanges and insightful arguments, Central Mindanao University (CMU) debaters earned the first runner-up title at the recently concluded Young Economists Convention (YEC) Debate Competition held at De La Salle University (DLSU), in Manila, on June 21, 2025.

Upon securing the first place nationwide among other competing teams in the preliminary round, the delegates representing the universityโ€“โ€“Team CMU A, composed of Hajara Kate Japson, Milky Wee Segovia, and Princess Marie Tomaroโ€“โ€“went head-to-head with the powerhouse contenders, Team RAT CCC, an alliance composed of economics students from two universities, DLSU and University of the Philippines (UP), for the championship title.

Advancing as grand finalists, the two teams, CMU A and RAT CCC, defended their positions on the motion, "This House Believes That Neo-Colonial Financial Institution (e.g., IMF, World Bank, etc.) Undermine the Global South's Economic Development." Ultimately, Team RAT CCC emerged as champions, making Team CMU A the first runner-up.

The team celebrated their commendable finish in a national-level competition with their mentors and advisers, Atty. James Violon and Dr. Marlou Jebb Andres, who accompanied them throughout the competition.

The YEC Debate Competition brings together the finest debaters nationwide to engage in economic discourseโ€”a forum serving as a training ground for future economic thinkers, practitioners, and leaders of the country.

A line to describe the role of fathers in the home.
The foundation. The source of strength. The protector. The provider. The hero.

They face silent struggles.
They carry invisible weights.
They fight unseen battles.
They hold unheard noisesโ€”for their family.

Truly, a fatherโ€™s love may sometimes be silent,
but it echoes in quiet sacrifices,
resounds in steady hands,
and speaks loudest in the silence of his strength.

To all the fathers all over the world: Papa, Tatay, Papang, Daddy, Dadaโ€”
and to all who stand as the head of the familyโ€”
Happy Fatherโ€™s Day!

Today, June 12, 2025, we honor the 127th Independence Day of the Philippines. A day to commemorate not only the rejection of centuries of foreign rule, but also the declaration of Filipino identity, dignity, and the collective ambition for self-governance.

May we always be reminded that every wave of the flag is a story of sacrifice, resistance, and hope. Let us remember those who came before usโ€”armed not with weapons but with hope, bravery, and love for our country. May their spirits move us to walk toward justice, truth, and unity.

This Araw Ng Kalayaan, may we reflect that freedom is not inherited, but rather upheld.
By the choices that we make
By the voices we raise, and
By the nation we strive and continue to build.

Today, let us take pride in remembering our past, and embracing our future.

Central Mindanao University (CMU) Team A and B showcased exceptional wit and intellect by advancing to the grand finals and earning a semi-finalist spot at the 16th Young Economistsโ€™ Convention (YEC) Debate Competition, which was held virtually via Zoom and Discord on June 7-8, 2025.

Following the 3-on-3 Asian Parliamentary style, CMU Aโ€”is composed of Princess Marie V. Tomaro, a third-year Political Science student; Milky Wee I. Segovia, a third-year Political Science student; and Hajara Kate Japson, a second-year Psychology studentโ€”showed a strong performance, earning them the top spot in the elimination round.

CMU Bโ€”represented by Leo Jay Baldidomar, a third-year Political Science student; Julss Castre, a first-year Political Science student; and Christ Wayne Bayer, a first-year BSED Major in English studentโ€”showed their competence, acquiring second place in the elimination round.

Both teams entered the semi-finals, with CMU A as the 1st Open Breaking Team garnering a perfect open break (3 wins), followed by CMU B as 2nd Open Breaking Team with 2 wins. CMU B facing off against the RAT CCCโ€”a joint team of De La Salle University (DLSU) Manila and the University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman. Meanwhile, CMU A triumphed, going head-to-head against the Frozen Moonlit from the University of Batangas, gaining their spot in the grand finals.

CMU A will face off against RAT CCC in the grand finals at the Teresa Yuchengco Auditorium, DLSU Manila this coming June 21, 2025.

The 16th YEC Debate Competition is an academic event that gathers young debaters from different universities across the country to engage in discussions and critically analyze contemporary economic issues.

I used to equate love with measurementโ€”something to be counted in fancy anniversaries, grand gestures, or the number of times someone said โ€œI love youโ€ from dusk till dawn. As if affection could only be earned through exhaustion and audacious efforts. I once believed love was plain euphoriaโ€”blaring, bold, and ever golden. As if it were built on infinite happiness, perfectly devoid of trials and tribulations.

There are rooms inside us where daylight never reaches, closets we keep swept with secrets, walls built out of fears and uncertainties, and fissures outlining the ceiling, revealing the cracks of our reality. Yet, to be loved at the highest count is to be seen even in those roomsโ€”without needing to turn on the lights, yet still unfaltering in exploring your horizons.

To be loved at the highest count isnโ€™t loud. It is the kind of quiet that doesnโ€™t need explaining. It is being handed a cup of your favorite tea early in the morning without asking. Being remembered in silences, chosen in chaos, held in someoneโ€™s prayers even when you're miles apart, being someone's safest place and their favorite thought. It is carried with the whispers of assurance. It lingers in a random gentle pat on your shoulders whenever you are swallowed by the ocean of your worries. It lives in a home without hints of nagging echoes; without reliving the shadows of your past mistakes; without having to experience any form of violence. It is being found adorable even when your energy shrinks and being reminded of the things you loveโ€”not quivered by he said, she said.

To be loved at the highest count means you arenโ€™t just an option but a constant answerโ€”always chosen over the silence, over the distance, over the long list of hindrances. Not because youโ€™re whole, but because even in fragments of your imperfections, they still see home. It's the kind of love that doesnโ€™t just see youโ€”it understands you, celebrates you, and chooses you always, even when you're hard to hold.

When living becomes dull and lifelessโ€”just when the world becomes a broken field plowed by painโ€”only then did I see how love conquers it all.
