SC ADMITS REVIEW OF ESCUDERO CAMPAIGN DONATION CASE

The Supreme Court (SC) En Banc issued a resolution on February 18, 2026, granting a Motion for Leave to File and Admit Petition for Review regarding the campaign donations of Senator Francis Joseph "Chiz" Escudero.

The case, docketed as G.R. No. E-03864 (John Barry T. Tayam v. Senator Francis Joseph ‘Chiz’ G. Escudero and Political Finance and Affairs Department of the Comelec), challenges the previous dismissal of a probe into a reported P30-million donation from a government contractor.

The petitioner seeks a formal review of the Comelec's decision to clear the senator and donor Lawrence Lubiano of the Centerways Construction and Development Inc.

The High Court's move allows for a full judicial review of the allegations. While the Comelec has expressed openness to the resolution, the camp of Senator Escudero has yet to issue an official statement on the matter. Details of the upcoming proceedings are being verified.

The Statements of Assets, Liabilities, and Networth (SALNs) of Vice President Sara Duterte during her tenure as mayor and vice mayor in Davao City are not relevant to the ongoing impeachment proceedings, Atty. Michael Poa said on Monday.

Duterte served as Davao City vice mayor from 2007 to 2010, and as mayor for three terms: 2010 to 2013; 2016 to 2019; and 2019 to 2022. She was elected as Vice President in 2022.

In determining the due process requirements in impeachment proceedings, the Supreme Court has said that "the basis of any charge must be for impeachable acts or omissions committed in relation to their office and during the current term of the impeachable officer."

Moreover, the team, together with the Traffic Investigator, promptly responded to a reported vehicular accident, providing immediate assistance to those involved while ensuring the smooth flow of traffic.
