What I Wish I Knew When I Started as a Virtual Assistant (VA)

Starting out, I had no roadmap, just a desire to work from home and provide for my family. Along the way, I’ve learned a lot that I wish I knew earlier:

1. You don’t need to know everything.
Start with what you have. The rest, you’ll learn by doing.
2. Your skills will improve with real experience.
Training is great, but doing the work is where growth really happens.
3. Choose a niche and go deep.
I committed to Property Management, and it helped me attract better clients and increase my rate.
4. Systems and organization are your best friend.
Learn tools, workflows, and processes early — they’ll save you time and stress.
5. Value your work from the beginning.
Don’t undersell yourself. The more you grow, the more your time is worth.

You don’t need to be perfect to start — just consistent enough to keep going.

Real talk: Hindi ako productive lagi.
And I’m learning to stop feeling guilty about it.

Not every day looks like checked boxes and clean desks.
Some days, it's just surviving the shift, staring at the screen, or getting nothing done but still showing up.

But that’s still something. That’s still part of the process.
Rest when you need. Come back stronger.

Take free online courses (YouTube, TikTok, or free webinars)
Look up basic VA skills like email management, calendar scheduling, data entry, etc.

Prepare your resume and portfolio
Even without experience, you can show your skills and willingness to learn.

This is great for support, tips, and even job referrals.

I started working with this client in October. My 8 months earnings. Yes, I didn’t have that money in hand… it went straight to bills, to my kids’ education, and to providing for my family. And that’s okay!

I used to juggle multiple clients just to earn more. Now, I work with only one premium client who values my time, trusts my work, and gives me space to grow. No micro-managing, no burnout. Just purpose, peace, and progress.

How did I get here?
🔑 I focused on mastering my niche—Property Management
🔑 I kept learning. I showed up. I improved my systems.

Almost 3 years in and I’ve built confidence, clarity, and freedom. That was when I decided I would raise my rate, because I finally believed I was worth it.

Lesson? You don’t need many clients. You need the right one.
Know your worth. Niche down. Grow through what you go through.

Keep sowing. The harvest will come.
