𝐙𝐂𝐇𝐇𝐒 𝐁𝐥𝐮𝐞 𝐃𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐬𝐨𝐚𝐫 𝐚𝐭 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐭 𝐌𝐞𝐞𝐭 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔 𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠

The athletes of Zamboanga Chong Hua High School (ZCHHS) joined fellow student-athletes from various schools during the grand opening of the Central District Meet 2026, held at Saint Joseph School Foundation Incorporated (SJSFI) on September 7, 2026, Monday, at around 7:00 a.m.

The opening ceremony officially marked the beginning of the three-day district sporting event, bringing together athletes and representatives from schools across the Zamboanga Central District. Participating schools included Canelar Integrated School, Zamboanga Chong Hua High School (ZCHHS), Saint Joseph School Foundation Incorporated (SJSFI), Sta. Barbara Central Elementary School, and Universal College Zamboanga City.

The ceremony opened with the gathering of athletes and delegates, whose energy and enthusiasm set the tone for the competition ahead. In an aim to emphasize the importance of fair play and adherence to the rules throughout the competition, a tournament official administered all participants in taking an oath, and pledged to affirming their commitment to uphold sportsmanship, discipline, fairness, and integrity throughout the meet.

A highlight of the ceremony was the lighting of the torch and raising of the flags, led by Division Meet qualifier and chess athlete Joyce Saavedra, symbolizing the official beginning of this year’s athletic competition.

With this, student-athletes, Hamdaraja and Capitanea represented ZCHHS, and officially raised the school’s banner in the opening proceedings.

After the ceremonial events, an Arnis performance captivated the audience and showcased the athleticism and cultural essence of the schools involved.

With the opening ceremony setting the stage for three days of competition, the Blue Dragons and fellow athletes from across the district are set to showcase their talent, discipline, and sportsmanship as they compete for a place in the next level of competition.

In campus journalism, truth should always come before speed. Every piece of information must be verified before it is published or believed. Misinformation can worsen situations, mislead readers, and create unnecessary confusion within the school community. What may seem like a small mistake can quickly spread and have lasting consequences.

Combating misinformation is essential because false information often leads to misunderstandings and conflict. Those who know the truth may argue with those who have accepted inaccurate information, creating unnecessary division among students, teachers, and even campus journalists. By ensuring that every report is factual and well-researched, campus journalists help promote peace, understanding, and responsible communication.

Misinformation can also have serious effects on individuals. For some people, false information can affect them emotionally, mentally, and even physically. Spreading inaccurate stories may add stress, damage a person's reputation, or cause emotional distress without people realizing the harm they have done. Instead of sharing or publishing unverified claims, campus journalists should research thoroughly, verify their sources, and present only accurate information in their articles.

Another reason we should fight misinformation is that students often rely on campus publications for reliable information. Campus journalists are among the people whom students, teachers, and the school community trust to report events truthfully and responsibly. Because of this trust, every article should be based on facts, credible sources, and careful verification.

Ultimately, combating misinformation protects both individuals and the integrity of campus journalism. It prevents people from making poor decisions based on false information, reduces the spread of harmful rumors, and avoids unnecessary panic within the school community. Most importantly, it builds trust between campus journalists and their readers while protecting the reputation of innocent individuals. In journalism, credibility is earned through accuracy, and every responsible campus journalist has the duty to ensure that the truth is always published.

𝐎𝐏𝐈𝐍𝐈𝐎𝐍 | Weight of Actions

Ignoring wrongdoing weakens justice; confronting it strengthens society. Whenever a public figure commits an act that is harmful or unacceptable, they may become a victim of cancel culture. This occurs when supporters or audiences stop supporting a public figure because of their actions.

Society has increasingly participated in cancel culture to demand accountability and social justice by holding public figures responsible for their actions. This usually happens when public figures engage in serious misconduct, such as sexual abuse, racism, sexism, and other harmful behaviors. When they fail to recognize the impact of their actions, the public may use cancel culture to call attention to their wrongdoing and demand accountability.

Cancel culture can promote accountability because it reminds public figures that their actions have consequences. When they engage in harmful behavior, society has the right to speak up and withdraw its support. This can encourage them to acknowledge their mistakes, apologize, and change their behavior.

A 2023 Pew Research Center survey found that 60% of U.S. adults had heard at least something about cancel culture. Social media has made it easier for people to share information and call attention to the actions of public figures. As a result, issues that might have been ignored in the past can receive widespread public attention.

The growing awareness of cancel culture demonstrates the influence of public opinion. When many people speak out against serious wrongdoing, public figures may be pressured to take responsibility for their actions. In this way, society can use its collective voice to promote accountability.

Some argue that cancel culture is unfair because people can be judged without knowing the whole story. However, this does not mean that cancel culture itself is ineffective, as people can verify the facts before taking action. When used responsibly, cancel culture can still hold public figures accountable for serious wrongdoing.

Overall, cancel culture can be an effective way to hold public figures accountable for serious wrongdoing. It gives people a voice and encourages those with influence to reflect on and improve their behavior. However, it should always be guided by facts, fairness, and the seriousness of the offense.

People should continue speaking out against serious wrongdoing, but they must verify information before taking action. Likewise, public figures should be given the opportunity to explain, apologize, and correct their behavior when appropriate. Cancel culture should seek accountability, not revenge.

To strengthen campus safety and prevent potential security incidents, the Zamboanga Chong Hua High School Safety and Security Office intensified its existing security measures, including stricter bag inspections, access control, and random classroom security checks, as classes resumed.

In an announcement addressed to parents, students, faculty, and staff, the office said the intensified guidelines form part of the school's continuing efforts to maintain a safe, secure, and protected learning environment.

Under the new measures, daily and more thorough bag inspections will be conducted at the entrance of each building. Students were also encouraged to arrive early to allow sufficient time for inspection and avoid long queues.

Grade 5 and Grade 6 students will now be included in the regular bag inspection procedures, with security personnel stationed in front of Building B to facilitate the process and maintain an orderly flow.

Parents and guardians were likewise urged to check and prepare their children's belongings before they leave home. Students were advised to separate metal objects for easier inspection, avoid bringing unnecessary belongings, and refrain from bringing bladed or potentially dangerous items unless specifically required for an authorized school activity.

If a bladed tool is needed for a subject or activity, it must be properly labeled with the student's name, grade and section, subject, teacher's name, and the class period when it will be used. The item must then be surrendered to security personnel for proper endorsement to the concerned teacher.

The school also clarified that inspections will not be limited to school bags. Food or lunch bags, sports bags, small pouches, personal bags, tumblers, and other containers brought onto campus may also be inspected.

Meanwhile, the school intensified its access-control procedures for parents, guardians, authorized fetchers, and visitors. Individuals without a valid admittance, dismissal, or security card will not be allowed entry as the school continues its transition from traditional paper identification cards to an RFID-based system.

Parents, guardians, and authorized fetchers who have not yet received their RFID cards were asked to submit their names to the Safety and Security Office or Guardhouse for verification and processing. The school is targeting more than 50 percent of the parent and authorized-fetcher population to be using the RFID system by mid-September.

The guidelines also prohibit tailgating or unauthorized entry, requiring each person entering the campus to undergo the necessary access-control procedure.

Visitors must present valid identification when requested, state the purpose of their visit, follow registration procedures, proceed only to authorized areas, and comply with instructions from security personnel and the concerned school office.

Random and unannounced security checks may also be conducted inside classrooms when deemed necessary, although the school said these will be carried out in a manner that minimizes disruption to classes and learning activities.

The Safety and Security Office further encouraged members of the school community to remain vigilant and report suspicious persons or behavior, lost or unidentified school IDs or RFID cards, unattended bags, potentially dangerous items, attempts to bypass security procedures, and other security hazards.

“Security is a shared responsibility,” the announcement emphasized, calling on students, parents, faculty, staff, and visitors to cooperate in maintaining a safer school environment.

According to the City Government of Zamboanga, classes at all levels in both public and private schools in Zamboanga City remain suspended on 𝐀𝐮𝐠𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝟐𝟎, 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔, 𝐓𝐡𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐝𝐚𝐲 to give way for campus-wide anti-dengue measures amid the city’s declared dengue epidemic.

The suspension is also due to the high heat index, which has reached the extreme caution level per the latest PAGASA bulletin.

Government services and business operations will continue as usual, while schools are advised to use alternative learning modalities to ensure continuous education.

The public is urged to observe safety measures amid the dangerously high heat index.
