Studies have shown that having a support system can help improve one's overall mental health. When you are surrounded with people who believe in and support you, it's easier to accept yourself or be yourself.
People in your support network should care for you, show love and compassion, and be available when you need them. These are folks that you can count on through the good times and the bad. They don't necessarily have to be exclusively your friends or family. They can include coworkers, your trusted mentor or coach, your therapist, and diverse people from different areas of your life. Everyoneβs support system will look different, depending on their interests and needs.
It is also important to reciprocate the support that these people are showing you, to strengthen your relationship with them. In fact, research shows that providing social support to others may be even more beneficial than receiving it. It's a two-way street!
Building a strong support system also takes time, so take your sweet time in casting who should be in your support system, and nurture your connection with them.
