HISTORY:

On November 8, 2013, Super Typhoon Haiyan—locally known as Yolanda—made landfall in the Philippines, unleashing destruction on an unprecedented scale. Striking first in Guiuan, Eastern Samar, and sweeping across the Visayas, Yolanda brought winds of over 300 kilometers per hour and storm surges as high as seven meters, leveling entire towns and coastal communities.

More than 16 million people were affected across nine regions, 44 provinces, and over 570 municipalities. Official reports recorded 6,300 deaths, 28,000 injuries, and 1,000 people still missing. Around 4 million individuals were displaced, with many losing their homes, livelihoods, and loved ones. Tacloban City in Leyte became the symbol of the catastrophe—its streets lined with debris and its people struggling to survive in the aftermath.

In the days and weeks that followed, the world watched as the Philippines faced one of its darkest moments. Humanitarian aid poured in from around the globe, and countless Filipinos came together to help those affected. The tragedy not only exposed the vulnerabilities of coastal communities but also ignited a nationwide commitment to strengthen disaster preparedness and resilience.

Twelve years later, the memory of Yolanda remains deeply etched in the nation’s heart. The stories of loss and survival continue to inspire compassion, courage, and unity. From the ruins rose a stronger people—proof that even in the face of overwhelming devastation, the Filipino spirit endures and rebuilds with hope.

Iloilo City Floodway

The Jaro Floodway is a 4.75 km diversion channel in Iloilo City, Philippines, built as part of the Iloilo Flood Control Project to reduce flooding.

It redirects floodwaters from the Jaro River into the Iloilo Strait. While its primary purpose is flood control, it has also led to a significant increase in local mangrove growth due to accelerated sedimentation.

Purpose and function:

Flood reduction: The primary goal was to divert floodwaters from the Jaro River to prevent damage in Iloilo City.

Diverts water: It channels excess water from the Jaro River directly into the Iloilo Strait.

Part of a larger project: It is one component of the broader Iloilo Flood Control Project, which includes other river improvements, dams, and watershed management efforts.

Patay ang isa ka lalaki matapos makabunggo ang iya ginamaneho nga motorsiklo sa street light sa Barangay Gines, Zarraga, Iloilo, pasado alas-8 kagab-i, Nobyembre 6, 2025.

Ang biktima ang ginkilala kay alyas JR, 30 anyos, pamilyado kag residente sang Barangay Salacay, Cabatuan, Iloilo.

Suno kay Police Lieutenant Vincent Garcia, hepe sang Zarraga Municipal Police Station sa interview sang GMA Super Radyo Iloilo, base sa panaysayon sang mga nakakita, ginapahayag nga nagabiyahe ang biktima halin sa Gines padulong sa town proper sang ini ang nawad-an sang kontrol sa motorsiklo sa tunga sang maulanon nga tyempo kag madanlog ang dalan.

Nabunggo ini sa street light kag nakaangkon sang patal nga pilas sa ulo kag nawong.

Gindala pa ang biktima sa Iloilo Provincial Hospital sa Pototan, apang gindeklarar nga dead on arrival.

Suno pa kay Lt. Garcia, makabig nga accident-prone area ang nasambit nga lugar, rason nga nagapanawagan ang kapulisan sa mga motorista nga magdoble sang paghalong sa pagmaneho, ilabi na kon nagaulan kag indi manami ang tyempo.

Padayon pa ang imbestigasyon sang kapulisan.
