UN aid chief Tom Fletcher has said that the famine could have been completely prevented, but food has not reached the Palestinian territory "because systematic Israeli obstructions" have prevented the delivery of aid.
However, the Israeli Foreign Ministry has denied the UN statement, saying,There is no famine in Gaza.
UN agencies have been warning for months about the deteriorating humanitarian situation in the Palestinian territory.
In its latest report released on Friday, the IPC said: As of 15 August 2025, there is credible evidence of famine in Gaza. The city covers about 20 percent of the Gaza Strip.
The famine is expected to spread to Deir al-Balah and Khan Yunis by the end of September, bringing the crisis to nearly two-thirds of the Palestinian territory. According to the report, After 22 months of intense conflict, more than half a million people in the Gaza Strip are facing famine, starvation and death.
Based on information collected between July 1 and August 15, this number is expected to increase to approximately 641,000 by the end of September. That is approximately one-third of Gaza's total population.
According to Reuters, about 280,000 of them live in the northern region, known as Gaza Governorate, which has been declared a famine area by the IPC, the first such declaration in the region.
The rest are Deir al-Balah and Khan Yunis, which are in central and southern Gaza, where famine is predicted to spread by the end of September.
To be declared a famine, an area must have at least 20 percent of the population suffering from acute malnutrition, one in three children suffering from acute malnutrition, and at least two out of every 10,000 people dying every day from hunger, malnutrition, or disease.
Although sometimes an area is not officially declared a famine if these conditions are not fully met.
