The energy industry is a major driver of climate change, accounting for over 75% of global greenhouse gas emissions. To meet the Paris climate accord target of limiting global temperature rise to 1.5Β°C, a rapid transition to renewables is necessary, requiring substantial investments. Despite financial challenges and geopolitical conflicts, the tide is turning in favor of renewables, driven by declining costs and increasing accessibility. Solar energy, in particular, has become more affordable and reliable, making it an attractive option, especially in developing countries.
Pakistan's solar sector is experiencing rapid growth, with the country importing 12.5 GW of solar panels in the first seven months of 2024. With over 300 days of sunlight annually, Pakistan's target of generating 60% of its energy from renewables by 2030 seems achievable. However, a significant urban-rural electrification divide highlights the need for policy interventions to prioritize off-grid solutions and ensure that the benefits of the solar revolution are shared with the over 40 million people living without access to electricity in rural areas. The global community must work together to bridge the energy divide and ensure that developing countries receive a fair share of clean energy investments.
