If you had told me a few years ago that Iโ€™d be a block editor advocate, I would have laughed.

I was firmly in the โ€œClassic Editor foreverโ€ camp. I liked my meta boxes, my familiar PHP templates, and the comfort of a workflow I had perfected over a decade.

But looking back, that resistance wasn't about the code. It was an identity crisis.

We often tie our professional value to the tools weโ€™ve mastered. When those tools change, it feels like our expertise is being threatened.

It took me a long time to realise that ๐—”๐—–๐—™ ๐—•๐—น๐—ผ๐—ฐ๐—ธ๐˜€ ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ ๐—ฎ๐—ฐ๐˜๐˜‚๐—ฎ๐—น๐—น๐˜† ๐—ฎ ๐˜€๐˜‚๐—ฝ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ฝ๐—ผ๐˜„๐—ฒ๐—ฟ, not a hindrance.

The journey from hating the change to embracing it was a wild emotional ride, but the results speak for themselves.

Here is why making the switch changed everything for my workflow:

No more 20-page manuals explaining how to find custom fields. If the client can see it on the screen, they can edit it. Itโ€™s intuitive, visual, and significantly reduces support emails.

With custom blocks, I can give clients the freedom to move sections around without the fear of them "breaking" the entire site layout.

Instead of building every page from scratch, I create a library of patterns. It makes the site editor work for me, not against me.

The biggest lesson I learned?

When you stop trying to force WordPress to act like itโ€™s 2015, you unlock a much faster, more modern way to build.

It is perfectly okay to change your mind about the tech you use. In fact, evolving your stack is the only way to stay ahead in this industry.

What about you?

Are you still holding onto the Classic Editor, or have you made the jump to a block-based workflow?

For years, I was that developer. The one who installed the "Classic Editor" plugin on every single site before even looking at the dashboard.

It felt safe. It felt predictable. I told myself it was for the "client's benefit," but the truth was much simpler: I didn't want to change my workflow. I viewed Gutenberg as a clunky hurdle that got in the way of "real" coding.

Everything changed when I took on a project for a high-traffic client with strict performance requirements. They didn't just want a website; they wanted a digital engine that was fast, scalable, and easy to manage.

I realised that the old way of doing things, stacking heavy plugins and bulky page builders, wasn't going to cut it anymore. I had to stop fighting the ecosystem and start working with it.

I decided to dive deep into building custom blocks. Here is what I discovered:

โ€ข ๐—ฃ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ณ๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—บ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฐ๐—ฒ ๐˜„๐—ถ๐˜๐—ต๐—ผ๐˜‚๐˜ ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐—ฏ๐—น๐—ผ๐—ฎ๐˜: By using native blocks, the site stayed incredibly lean. No more loading massive CSS and JS libraries just to display a simple landing page.
I could define exactly how components looked and behaved. This meant the client could build pages easily, but they couldn't "accidentally" break the brand identity I worked so hard to create.
โ€ข ๐—” ๐— ๐—ผ๐—ฑ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ป ๐—ช๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—ธ๐—ณ๐—น๐—ผ๐˜„: WordPress shifted from being a "blogging tool" to a legitimate component-based framework. It finally felt aligned with modern web standards like React.

The lesson? Our tools aren't usually the bottleneck our habits are.

Once I stopped seeing the Block Editor as a replacement for the old editor and started seeing it as a framework for the future, my entire approach to web development changed.

The flexibility is there. The speed is there. The control is there. You just have to be willing to let go of the "safe" way of doing things.

I'm curious to know where you stand in this shift.

Are you still leaning on page builders like Elementor or Divi for your custom client work because of the speed of delivery? Or have you fully embraced the native block ecosystem for the performance gains?

Leave a comment below and letโ€™s talk about it Iโ€™d love to hear your experiences!

(And if you found this relatable, give it a like so others can join the conversation! ๐Ÿ‘)

Last week, I fell into that trap.

It was a "simple" font change.
One line of code. One refresh. Done.

Except it wasn't.

That tiny adjustment triggered a bizarre plugin conflict I never saw coming.
Suddenly, the header vanished. The mobile menu stopped responding.
My "five-minute task" turned into a ๐—ณ๐—ผ๐˜‚๐—ฟ-๐—ต๐—ผ๐˜‚๐—ฟ forensic investigation through the backend.

We often make the mistake of undervaluing our troubleshooting skills because they feel like "fixing mistakes."
But in reality, troubleshooting is where the ๐˜๐—ฟ๐˜‚๐—ฒ ๐˜ƒ๐—ฎ๐—น๐˜‚๐—ฒ of a professional lies.

The WordPress ecosystem is a delicate web of dependencies.
When you change one strand, the whole web vibrates.
The client isn't just paying you for the edit; they are paying you to ensure the site stays alive after the edit.

Here is what I reminded myself of after that four-hour hunt:

โ†ณ Itโ€™s in knowing exactly how to reverse-engineer a crash when a "simple" change goes sideways.

You aren't just charging for the time it takes to type code. You are charging for the risk you manage every time you touch a live site.

We want to be helpful, so we quote based on the best-case scenario. But the "best case" rarely accounts for plugin updates, PHP version conflicts, or legacy code hidden in the theme.

Always buffer your "quick fix" quotes by at least 2x.

If you think it will take 15 minutes, quote for 30 or 60.
If it ends up being 5 minutes? You look like a hero.
If it ends up being 4 hours? Youโ€™ve at least protected some of your margin and set the right expectations.

Stop underestimating the complexity of what you do.
Start charging for the years of experience that allow you to find that needle in the haystack.

(If youโ€™ve been in the trenches with a "simple" task lately, hit the ๐—น๐—ถ๐—ธ๐—ฒ button or ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ฝ๐—ผ๐˜€๐˜ so others don't feel alone!)
