The recent developments represent a serious red flag on the part of the Government of Punjab. The need for an Gilgit Baltistan medical medical college has now become more urgent than ever.
This matter must be resolved before the next admission cycle. Government of GB must protect future applicants from the ambiguity, uncertainty, and psychological stress that students were forced to endure this year.
📢 A Serious Issue Regarding Medical College Admissions for Students of Gilgit-Baltistan:
Students of Gilgit-Baltistan are facing a grave and unprecedented issue during the medical college admission process; one that has never occurred before.
This year, the University of Health Sciences (UHS) assumed responsibility for admitting students of Gilgit-Baltistan into Punjab medical colleges, a responsibility that was previously managed by GB DOEC.
As a result, out of the 82 MBBS seats allocated to Gilgit-Baltistan:
55 seats came under the authority of UHS,
while only 27 seats remained with GB DOEC.
In this context, GB DOEC formally requested UHS to adhere to the established admission policies of Gilgit-Baltistan, which clearly include:
maintaining a separate quota system,
and keeping open-merit seats separate.
A key and longstanding policy of GB DOEC is that students already enrolled in any medical college are not eligible to seek admission again. This policy has been consistently implemented in the merit lists of other provinces as well.
⚠️ However, it is deeply unfortunate that UHS disregarded this policy.
Despite clear communication, UHS declared already-enrolled students eligible for re-admission and included their names in the merit list.
As a result:
❗ Genuinely deserving and capable students are unfairly excluded,
❗ Double allocation of limited quota seats is taking place.
📍 The situation is particularly alarming in District Astore, where three already-enrolled students were granted admission again by UHS despite an official letter from GB DOEC.
Consequently, several deserving students are now losing an entire academic year, through no fault of their own.
🙏 Appeal to the Authorities
We respectfully urge:
Department of Education Gilgit Baltistan
Health Department Gilgit Baltistan
Minister of Education, Gilgit-Baltistan
Cheif Secretary Gilgit Baltistan
Minister health Gilgit Baltistan
Health Secretary Gilgit Baltistan
Secretary of Education Gilgit Baltistan
to urgently intervene, issue a fresh official directive, or establish direct communication with UHS to immediately halt this unjust practice and ensure that merit and fairness are strictly upheld.
If this issue is not resolved promptly, the same injustice will recur every year, and deserving students will continue to be deprived of their rightful opportunities.
