: EvK2CNR, in collaboration with Baltistan University, organized a two day workshop on Promotion of Eco Friendly Tourism. The event brought together the Vice Chancellor of Baltistan University, Dr. Abdul Mateen, Vice Chancellor of Karakoram International University, Professor Dr. Attaullah Shah, representatives from UNDP, officials from government departments, environmental experts, and a large number of students and participants.
Addressing the inaugural session, Vice Chancellor Baltistan University Dr. Abdul Mateen emphasized that along with promoting tourism in Gilgit-Baltistan, attention must also be paid to the environmental challenges associated with it. He appreciated the joint efforts of EvK2CNR and UNDP, highlighting that Baltistan University is working closely with these organizations to advance sustainable and responsible tourism in the region.
Vice Chancellor of Karakoram International University Professor Dr. Attaullah Shah said that Gilgit Baltistan holds immense potential for tourism, yet the region also faces serious environmental issues. He stressed the need for wise and sustainable strategies to promote eco friendly tourism that preserves nature while supporting economic growth.
Fahim Ahmed, Technical Specialist at UNDP, briefed the participants about the joint initiatives of UNDP and EvK2CNR under the “Water for Development” project, supported by the Government of Italy. He stated that several initiatives are being implemented to promote responsible and eco friendly tourism. As part of the project, an environmentally friendly guesthouse is being constructed in Thalay Valley, Ghanche, ensuring that sustainability remains a key focus.
Riaz ul Hassan, Country In Charge of EvK2CNR Pakistan, shared details about the institution’s ongoing projects related to tourism and environmental development.
Moreover, Abid Ali (Director CKNP), Rehmat Karim Baig (Deputy Director, Department of Tourism Baltistan), and EvK2CNR representatives Aurangzeb and Arif Hussain also addressed the workshop, presenting valuable suggestions to promote eco-friendly tourism across Gilgit Baltistan.
The participants reaffirmed their commitment to working collectively for a sustainable, environmentally responsible, and globally recognized tourism model in Gilgit Baltistan.
