Pakistan has decided to finally finish a long-delayed gas pipeline project in two parts. First, they'll lay down 81 kilometers of the pipeline starting from Gwadar, where Iran has already completed its part. This will be connected to Nawabshah later on. The Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC) has approved this plan. They'll start by laying the 81-kilometer section, and then connect it to Nawabshah later. The Petroleum Division will ask the federal cabinet for approval, and the finance ministry will arrange the funds from the Gas Infrastructure Development Cess (GIDC) board.

Initially, the 81-kilometer pipeline will supply gas to Gwadar from the IP gas line project. Iran has given Pakistan more time by extending the 180-day deadline until September 2024. If Pakistan doesn't respond positively, Iran might take the matter to international arbitration and seek an $18 billion penalty. However, Iran has also offered to work with Pakistan to find a solution before the deadline.

A team of Iranian experts was supposed to visit Pakistan in January, but it got delayed due to tensions between the two countries. Now, things are back to normal, and both sides are working together to resolve the issue. Under the SIFC's guidance, the Petroleum Division will work with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to arrange the visit of the Iranian delegation to Pakistan. They'll collaborate to come up with a feasible plan to complete the project.

An image of a young polar bear drifting off to sleep on an iceberg has won the UK's annual Wildlife Photographer of the Year People’s Choice Award.

The shot was captured by British amateur photographer Nima Sarikhani in Svalbard, a Norwegian archipelago in the Arctic Ocean, a region particularly affected by global warming.

Mr Sarikhani said he wanted the photograph to inspire hope and that there is still time to “fix the mess we have caused” by the human-made climate crisis.

Under Prime Minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar's caretaker administration, a new benchmark has been set in bank borrowing, soaring to nearly Rs4 trillion from July 1, 2023, to January 19, 2024.

This remarkable surge reflects a significant 185% increase compared to the same period in the preceding fiscal year, where the government borrowed Rs1.398 trillion, as per data from the State Bank of Pakistan. Despite meeting revenue collection targets for the first six months, concerns arise over the economic repercussions as Pakistan grapples with a substantial debt burden, exacerbated by inflation, sluggish economic growth, and the challenge of addressing circular debts in the power sector.

The borrowing strategy, with returns around 21%, poses a costly endeavor for the caretaker government, consuming over half of the budget allocated for debt servicing alone. This approach has faced criticism from financial experts and is acknowledged by the government as a significant economic challenge.

Banking institutions have emerged as primary beneficiaries, reporting doubled profits in 2023. With a trend of increased borrowing in FY22 and FY23, it appears unlikely to reverse in the near term. The looming general elections on February 8 and the anticipated formation of a new government may extend political uncertainties, dampening investment prospects.

McDonald's reported its first quarterly sales miss in almost four years, primarily due to weak sales growth in its International Developmental Licensed Markets segment, which includes the Middle East, China, and India.

The company's overall net profit increased by 7% in the fourth quarter, attributed to higher menu pricing and reduced raw material costs. However, the comparable sales in this segment only rose by 0.7%, significantly missing the estimated 5.5% growth.

CEO Chris Kempczinski highlighted the impact of the world situation and associated misinformation in the Middle East, affecting McDonald's performance in the region.

The U.S. business also showed signs of weakness, with slower traffic at McDonald's U.S. stores. Despite these challenges, McDonald's posted a per-share profit of $2.95 in the fourth quarter, surpassing analysts' expectations of $2.82 per share.

The launch of the Apple Vision Pro has caused quite a stir in the virtual reality (VR) headset market, boasting remarkable capabilities that go beyond traditional VR headsets. Despite Apple’s reluctance to label it as a simple VR headset, the recently unveiled ‘Spatial Computer’ has caught the attention of tech enthusiasts worldwide.

In the United States, the Apple Vision Pro is priced at a staggering $3499. Many in Pakistan are eagerly awaiting its arrival in the local market, wondering what the price tag will be. However, determining its price in Pakistan is not as straightforward as converting the USD price to Pakistani Rupees (PKR). Aside from the base market value, we need to factor in various additional costs such as import taxes, duties, and retailer margins. Considering these factors, the anticipated price of the Apple Vision Pro in Pakistan is expected to be higher than its USD equivalent.

At the current exchange rate, $3499 translates to approximately Rs. 970,053. Adding import taxes and duties, the price could easily surpass the Rs. 1,100,000 mark. Furthermore, retailers typically charge an additional margin to generate profit, further increasing the price for consumers. Taking into account these factors, it is estimated that the Apple Vision Pro’s price in Pakistan could be around Rs. 1,200,000. However, this is still a conservative estimate given the economic conditions in Pakistan.

Moreover, it’s important to note that the $3499 price tag is for the base model with 256 GB storage. The variant with 1 TB storage is priced at $3899 in the US. Considering the higher storage capacity and additional features, the price for the maxed-out variant in Pakistan may exceed Rs. 1,300,000 at retailers.

Pakistan received $150 billion in remittances from 2017 to 2022, making it the fifth-highest remittance-receiving country in 2022. This information was shared at the 2nd Albaraka Regional Conference on home remittances held on Monday.

The Saleh Kamel Islamic Economy Database revealed that Pakistan ranked fifth among the top countries receiving remittances in 2022. Specifically, in 2022, Pakistan received $29.9 billion in remittances, making it an important destination for money sent by overseas Pakistanis. These remittances play a crucial role in Pakistan's economy. They accounted for 33% of the country's total imports, ranking Pakistan second among OIC (Organization of Islamic Cooperation) countries and fifth globally in 2022.

To discuss the significance of home remittances, the AlBaraka Forum for Islamic Economy, in collaboration with the Islamic Chamber of Commerce and Development (ICCD), organized the conference. The conference highlighted the importance of collaboration between governments and financial institutions to establish secure and legal channels for remittances. Yousef Khalawi, the secretary-general of the AlBaraka Forum for Islamic Economy, emphasized that Islamic financial institutions play a role in encouraging recipients to invest sustainably in local businesses and welfare programs.

The conference featured discussions by experts and leaders, including insights from representatives of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP). The event aimed to provide policy frameworks and future outlooks for home remittances, focusing on streamlining remittance flows to contribute to sustainable economic growth. The experts and stakeholders at the conference emphasized the need for innovative strategies to enhance the positive impact of remittances on Pakistan's national economy. The event brought together key figures to discuss strengthening Islamic finance tools to achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and align remittance strategies with sustainable development objectives.

In response to concerns about counterfeit currency, the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has initiated an Art Competition to seek fresh designs for a new series of banknotes.

The SBP has invited local artists, designers, and art students to participate in the competition, encouraging them to infuse their creativity into the nation's currency.

The competition focuses on themes such as social and cultural identities, demographic diversity, climate change, environmental protection, economic development, natural landscapes, architectural heritage, and national symbols.

Artists are urged to submit their designs by March 11, 2024, to the Finance Department at the SBP headquarters in Karachi. The SBP has also announced cash prizes for the top three designs, with terms and conditions specifying the criteria for submission, unique color schemes for denominations, and the involvement of a jury to evaluate and select the winning designs.

This innovative approach not only promotes artistic expression but also engages the public in shaping the visual representation of the country's currency.
