What Do Your Semen Analysis Report Parameters Mean?
A semen analysis is a key part of male fertility evaluation. Understanding the report can be confusing, so let's break down the key parameters:
🔬 Volume: This measures the amount of semen produced. A normal volume is typically 1.5 ml or more. Low volume can sometimes be associated with blockages or hormonal issues.
🔢 S***m Concentration (or Count): This is the number of s***m per milliliter of semen. A healthy concentration is 15 million s***m/ml or higher. A low count is called oligos***mia, and no s***m is called azoos***mia.
🏃♂️ Motility: This is the percentage of s***m that are moving. The World Health Organization (WHO) has a specific breakdown:
👉 Total Motility: Percentage of all moving s***m (progressive and non-progressive). A healthy report shows 40% or more.
👉 Progressive Motility: Percentage of s***m moving forward in a straight line or in large circles. A progressive motility of 32% or more is considered normal.
🧐 Morphology: This is the percentage of s***m with a normal shape and structure. While a low number might seem alarming, only a small percentage (4% or more according to strict criteria) is needed for normal fertility potential. This is often the most misunderstood parameter, as having many "abnormal" looking s***m is common.
🌟 Vitality: This measures the percentage of live s***m, especially if motility is low. A vitality of 58% or more is considered normal.
💧 Liquefaction: Semen is initially thick but should liquefy within 15-30 minutes after collection. If it doesn't, it can affect s***m's ability to move.
A single abnormal result doesn't automatically mean infertility. Your doctor will interpret the full report in the context of your overall health and medical history.
