China's Zuchongzhi-3 Quantum Processor Is 1,000,000,000,000,000 Times Faster Than Supercomputer

The University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) has unveiled Zuchongzhi-3, an innovative 105-qubit quantum processor that reportedly performs computations one quadrillion times faster than the most powerful supercomputers available today, solidifying China’s leadership in quantum technology.

Surpassing Google and Classical Computing Milestones

In 2019, Google’s 53-qubit Sycamore processor solved a sophisticated problem in just 200 seconds—a feat once thought to demand 10,000 years from traditional supercomputers. Yet, by 2023, USTC researchers leveraged advanced classical methods to replicate this in only 14 seconds.

Unmatched Capabilities

Equipped with 105 qubits and 182 couplers, Zuchongzhi-3 ranks among the most sophisticated superconducting quantum processors ever developed. It boasts a coherence time of 72 microseconds, allowing extended quantum operations with minimal interference. Additionally, it achieves exceptional gate accuracy, with single-qubit operations at 99.90% fidelity and two-qubit operations at 99.62%, ensuring highly dependable quantum processing.

Unprecedented Speed

Zuchongzhi-3 completed an 83-qubit, 32-layer random circuit sampling task in mere seconds—a calculation that Frontier, the globe’s leading classical supercomputer, would take an estimated 6.4 billion years to match. This milestone marks the beginning of a transformative era in quantum computing, pushing the limits of what technology can achieve.
