*The Beacham Controversy: Coastal Economy, Marine Balance, and the Hour of Decision*
*By: Sher Ali *

The recent press conference held on the shores of Gwadar has once again made it clear that this issue is not just about catching one fish. It has become a question of the entire marine ecosystem, the local economy, and the future of thousands of families.

The points raised by the Zar Fishermen Alliance in this press conference at Dhoriya Shed are not routine demands. They reflect a crisis that is silently intensifying. The Alliance leaders clearly announced that if the ban on Beacham fishing is not enforced immediately, they will stage another sit-in protest from Monday. This announcement is an expression of the growing anxiety that is clearly being felt in coastal communities.

Beacham, collectively classified as Indian sardine or _Sardinella_ species, may appear to be a small and common fish. But in the marine ecosystem, it holds the position of a foundational pillar. This is the very fish that serves as a primary food source for large commercial species, especially tuna and other predatory fish.

When this basic link in the food chain is indiscriminately hunted at a juvenile stage, the effects are not limited to one species. The entire food chain is disrupted. According to experts, this kind of fishing can lead to a decline in large fish, damage to marine biodiversity, and a clear drop in overall production in the future.

The press conference also revealed that decisions on this matter have already been made at various levels. In a meeting at the Deputy Commissioner Gwadar’s office, it was decided that specific nets would only be used for larger fish. Meanwhile, the Fisheries Department has already issued clear orders banning the catch of Beacham. Despite this, the lack of enforcement raises a serious question. It is this gap that has forced fishermen to protest.

The allegations made by the Zar Fishermen Alliance against fish processing companies are also alarming. According to them, some companies are not only ignoring the bans to protect their commercial interests, but are also trying to create divisions among fishermen. If these claims are true, the situation becomes even more complex, because it means that along with the reckless use of natural resources, the local social structure is also being affected.

This issue is not limited to Gwadar. It is part of a global trend. Many countries around the world have faced the reality that the uncontrolled catch of Indian sardine and similar small fish throws the entire fisheries system out of balance. Countries like Peru, Chile, and Spain have periodically imposed seasonal bans to give these fish a chance to breed. In the European Union, a quota system is used to limit the catch and keep stocks sustainable.

In the 1970s, the uncontrolled catch of anchovy in Peru pushed the entire fisheries industry into a severe crisis. After that, this issue began to be taken more seriously at the global level.

The fishermen of Gwadar are facing this same global reality. The only difference is that there is still time here. The position of the Zar Fishermen Alliance is that a complete ban is not the solution. What is needed is scientifically managed fishing. Their demands include: a complete closure during the breeding season, a ban on catching juvenile fish, and strict monitoring of large trawlers.

There is also an important aspect of balancing short-term gain with long-term loss. The truth is that catching Beacham or Indian sardine provides immediate profit. For the fishmeal industry, poultry feed, and exports, it is a cheap and easy resource. This is why some circles oppose a ban. But if this continues without regulation, this same industry may face a shortage of raw material in the future.

The press conference in Gwadar is in fact a clear warning. This is not just a protest, but a serious message that if timely action is not taken, the consequences will be far-reaching and damaging. Marine resources are not unlimited, and maintaining their balance is the real challenge.

The fishermen who have taken to the streets today are actually fighting to protect their future. Now it is the responsibility of the relevant authorities to listen to this voice and make decisions that secure not only today, but also tomorrow.
