For more than two centuries, the free market has influenced governments, businesses, and everyday life around the world.

But where did this system originate?

This first chapter follows the story from Adam Smith's ideas to the Bretton Woods Conference and the creation of the modern international financial system.

Whether you agree or disagree with free-market economics, understanding its history is essential.

The military escalation between Israel and Hezbollah has intensified dramatically. Israeli forces have ramped up their cross-border campaign, striking over 100 targets overnight across southern Lebanon and the eastern Bekaa Valley. Local health authorities report that at least 31 people were killed in a single day of strikes, including women and children, with a particularly devastating strike hitting the village of Mashghara. Despite ongoing, fragile diplomatic discussions aimed at stabilizing the region, the violence continues to displace hundreds of thousands of civilians and push local infrastructure to the brink.

The UN condemned the Israeli strike on civilians.

Iran has officially denounced recent US military strikes in its southern Hormozgan province, labeling them a "gross violation" of the seven-week ceasefire. Tehran criticized the action as a sign of "bad faith and unreliability" by Washington during ongoing regional peace talks. While the US military claims the strikes were strictly defensive targets, Iran's Revolutionary Guard maintains it reserves the right to retaliate, warning that Washington will bear all consequences.
For more background on the escalating tensions between the two nations, you can watch this report outlining when Iran Accused the US of Violating the Ceasefire Agreement, which highlights the initial friction points surrounding the truce.

TEHRAN — Iran’s Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei has accused the United States of deliberately testing an experimental weapon on civilians during a February 28 missile strike on a local sports hall.
According to Al Jazeera, the strike killed 24 people, including a two-year-old girl. In a post on X, Baqaei stated that the attack utilized a new airburst system "unleashing 180,000 of high-velocity tungsten pellets that tore through the area in every direction with devastating force."
"This was not a mistake – it was a calculated decision to test the destructive power of a new weapon system on Iranian civilians," Baqaei asserted, calling the incident a "despicable war crime." Washington has denied the allegations

Israel Intensifies Hezbollah Strikes
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced a major escalation against Hezbollah, ordering the military to "press the gas pedal even harder."
The shift follows the deaths of 11 Israeli soldiers by Hezbollah drones, which violated an April ceasefire agreement. Despite ongoing US and Iranian peace negotiations, Netanyahu asserted Israel's right to eliminate regional threats. Following the declaration, heavy Israeli airstrikes struck Lebanon's Bekaa Valley, triggering fresh civilian evacuations in Beirut.

The US military has launched new strikes against Iranian forces in southern Iran, near the strategic port city of Bandar Abbas.

According to US Central Command (CENTCOM), the action was taken in self-defense to neutralize immediate threats to American troops. The targeted operations focused heavily on dynamic Iranian missile sites and hostile naval vessels that were actively attempting to lay mines across critical shipping lanes in the Strait of Hormuz.

This localized escalation poses a direct threat to a highly fragile, multi-week ceasefire that has been in place since early April. It comes at a highly sensitive diplomatic juncture, occurring precisely while high-level peace talks are being mediated in Doha by Qatari and Pakistani officials to bring a formal end to the wider regional conflict.

Kyiv has been hit by a massive Russian aerial assault utilizing the highly destructive Oreshnik hypersonic ballistic missile.
Overnight, Moscow launched roughly 90 missiles and 600 drones across Ukraine. Multiple ballistic payloads breached defenses in Kyiv, striking vital water infrastructure and residential areas, leaving four dead and 80 injured.
The Kremlin claims the Mach 11 missile strike is retaliation for a drone hit in Luhansk. Western leaders have heavily condemned the attack, calling the deployment of the impossible-to-intercept weapon a reckless move of nuclear brinkmanship.

Foreign ministry spokesman Esmail Baqai's remarks came after US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said an agreement could possibly be reached on Monday.

"It is correct to say that we have reached a conclusion on a large portion of the issues under discussion," Baqai said in Tehran on Monday. "But to say that this means the signing of an agreement is imminent - no-one can make such a claim."

The memorandum of understanding reportedly involves a 60-day ceasefire extension, reopening the Strait of Hormuz and a plan for further negotiations over Iran's nuclear programme.

At the weekend, President Donald Trump suggested the sides were closing a deal, even though he later said he had instructed negotiators "not to rush into" one.

On Monday, Rubio told reporters in the Indian capital, Delhi: "We thought we might have some news last night. Maybe today."

Cautioning "I wouldn't read too much into it", Rubio said: "It takes a little while to hear back from Iran."
