Family: Father – Mahmood Mamdani, a well-known anthropologist; Mother – Mira Nair, award-winning filmmaker.
Political career:
Elected to the New York State Assembly representing District 36 (Queens) starting Jan 1 2021.
In 2024–25, he ran for Mayor of New York City and became the Democratic Party nominee via upset win over Andrew Cuomo in June 2025.
His campaign platform: e.g., rent-freeze for stabilized units, free city buses, building hundreds of thousands of affordable housing units.
