Microsoft announced plans Wednesday to bring internet access via satellite to 10 million people, half of them in Africa, as part of efforts to bridge a digital divide with the developing world.

At a summit with African leaders in Washington led by President Joe Biden, the technology leader said it would start the satellite project immediately with a priority on bringing internet for the first time to parts of Egypt, Senegal and Angola.

Microsoft president Brad Smith said that the company has been impressed by its engineers in Nairobi and Lagos.

In the partnership with satellite provider Viasat, Microsoft said it would also provide internet in Guatemala, Mexico and more remote parts of the United States and also step up efforts in Nigeria and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Smith said the biggest holdup to internet access has been the lack of electricity, which is not reliable for around half of Africans.

“For people who don’t go there or don’t spend time thinking about Africa, it’s hard for them to even to imagine that because electricity in my view is the greatest invention of the 19th century,”

Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari said Thursday that Pakistan is "not pursuing or receiving" Russian oil at a discounted price, but added that his country was “exploring” various options.

Earlier this month, State Minister for Petroleum Musadik Malik said that Russia had agreed to provide crude oil at discounted prices, a development that could potentially bring down the energy import cost for Pakistan.

Speaking at a press conference, he stated that Russia will supply petrol and diesel to Pakistan at the maximum possible discount.

Expensive fuel is one of Pakistan's top issues with a cash-strapped economy hard-pressed to finance its growing energy needs.

Germany got the go-ahead to buy F-35 fighter jets produced by U.S. defence giant Lockheed Martin as part of military procurement projects worth 13 billion euros ($13.85 billion), Defence Minister Christine Lambrecht said on Wednesday.

The German parliament’s budget committee approved the spending, including 10 billion euros for the F-35 jets as well as funds for the purchase of encrypted digital radios and assault rifles.

These projects are among the first to tap money from a 100 billion euro ($106 billion) special fund that Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced in a major policy shift days after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February.

The money is meant to bring the German military’s weapons and equipment back up to standard after decades of attrition following the end of the Cold War. Of the 100-billion-euro fund for the armed forces, Lambrecht said: “This will probably not be enough to close the gaps that emerged over the past years because we neglected procurement.”

Finance Minister Ishaq Dar Thursday announced that the price of petrol was being reduced by Rs10 and diesel was being brought down by Rs7.5 per litre, Aaj New reported. The reduction means the price of petrol is now Rs214.8 per litre, while that of diesel is Rs227.80 per litre with effect from December 16.

“The prime minister wants that we should pass maximum relief to the public and we have been implementing that since October 30," he said in a televised address.

“According to our calculations, petrol prices — that are Rs224.80 — will be reduced by Rs10 to Rs214.8 after midnight. High-speed diesel will be decreased by Rs7.5 to Rs227.80,” the finance minister said.

Argentina and Lionel Messi face Croatia on Tuesday in a World Cup semi-final that pits South American flair against the guile of Luka Modric and a remarkable fighting spirit.

In the second semi-final on Wednesday, reigning champions France take on giant-killing Morocco, the first African team ever to reach the last four of a World Cup.

But first all eyes will be on the cavernous Lusail Stadium, where Messi, now 35, will attempt to guide Argentina into the final for the second time in eight years against the beaten finalists in 2018.

Messi, who suffered defeat to Germany in the 2014 final, is desperate to crown an extraordinary career by finally winning the World Cup and emulating another Argentinian legend, the late Diego Maradona.

The Paris Saint-Germain forward was a pivotal figure in Friday’s stormy quarter-final win over the Netherlands, when a record 18 yellow cards were shown and players from both sides were involved in a melee as the referee fought to regain control.

The match ended with Argentina players appearing to taunt their distraught Dutch opponents before sprinting away to celebrate after a penalty shoot-out win.

Even the normally mild-mannered Messi was caught up in the bad blood, shouting abuse at Dutch players while he was being interviewed after the game.

Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni defended his players’ conduct in an eve-of-game news conference on Monday, insisting they had nothing to apologise for.

“The game the other day was played in the right way by both teams. That is football,” said the 44-year-old Argentina coach.

Tchouameni emerges as new leader of France midfield at World Cup

“I don’t buy this idea that we don’t know how to win. The game was played in the right way.”

Croatia surprising again

Croatia, who beat Japan and pre-tournament favourites Brazil in penalty shoot-outs to reach the last four, have not won a knockout game in normal time at a major tournament since they came third at the 1998 World Cup.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Tuesday announced the revised schedule for New Zealand’s forthcoming tour of Pakistan starting December 26.

In a statement, the cricket board said the schedule for the two Tests and three One-Day Internationals (ODIs) was announced after consultation with New Zealand Cricket (NZC).

As per the new schedule, the first Test of the two-match series, initially slated to start on December 27, will now commence on December 26 at the National Bank Cricket Arena Karachi while the second Test will be played in Multan from January 3.

Meanwhile, the three ODIs will be played on January 10, 12, and 14 in Karachi.

Schedule of New Zealand’s tour of Pakistan:

First Test – 26-30 December at National Bank Cricket Arena Karachi

Second Test - 3-7 January at Multan Cricket Stadium

First ODI – 10 January at National Bank Cricket Arena Karachi

Second ODI – 12 January at National Bank Cricket Arena Karachi

Third ODI - 14 January at National Bank Cricket Arena Karachi

The Kiwis were earlier scheduled to tour Pakistan twice, first for the Test series in December, and then for the limited-over series in April 2023. However, the two boards have now agreed to play two Tests and three ODIs in Dec-Jan, and T20s later in April.

New Zealand will be returning to Pakistan more than a year after abandoning a series there over security concerns. They left Pakistan authorities fuming after abruptly withdrawing from their first tour of the country in nearly two decades, minutes before the start of the first ODI in Rawalpindi in September last year.

Earlier this year, a full-strength Australian squad toured Pakistan for a complete series.

In October, England completed their first tour of Pakistan in 17 years, playing seven Twenty20 internationals, before returning to the country for three Tests in December. They now lead the series 2-0 with the third Test scheduled for Karachi from December 17 to 21.

Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah revealed Tuesday that there was “clear evidence” that India was involved in Lahore's Johar Town blast that killed three people and injured 22 others in June last year, Aaj News reported.

While addressing a press conference in Islamabad along with Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) Additional IG Punjab Imran Mehmood, Sanaullah announced raising the matter in the United Nations (UN).

He said that Pakistanis had given innumerable sacrifices in the wave of terrorism that has gripped the country over the decades.

"India, through one way or the other, woos the international community and then engages in terrorist activities in Pakistan," the minister added.

"This incident took place some time back and we have caught all the culprits related to this. India has to some extent accepted the responsibility for it," he said.

The CTD official, while briefing on the progress in the investigation of Lahore’s Johar Town blast, said the prime suspect Sami ul Haq was arrested from Balochistan.

"During the investigation, we learned that he was an agent of the Indian spy agency RAW since 2012," he claimed.

Mehmood said as much as 200 kilogrammes of explosive material was used in the blast that killed three people, including two policemen.
