Pakistan is considering a major administrative shake-up under a proposed 28th Constitutional Amendment, with one proposal suggesting that Punjab could be divided into three provinces.

The proposal is part of a wider government debate over whether creating new provinces would improve governance and address problems linked to the devolution of powers under the 18th Amendment.

Other ideas being discussed include splitting Balochistan into two provinces and dividing Khyber Pakhtunkhwa into Pakhtun and Hazara regions.

Kia could bring its latest Picanto to Pakistan as early as next month, according to automotive expert Suneel Munj. Lucky Motor Corporation has reportedly been preparing to introduce the new-generation hatchback, although the company has not officially confirmed the launch or shared a date.

The development comes after Lucky Motor discontinued the current 1,000cc Picanto following six years in Pakistan. The model has been removed from Kia Pakistan’s website, and new bookings have been permanently closed.

However, the Picanto name may not be leaving Pakistan. If the reported plan goes ahead, the newer model could return soon, giving buyers a fresh option in the small hatchback market. Pricing, specifications, local assembly and the exact launch date have not yet been announced.

History was made as Saudi Arabia’s new national carrier, Riyadh Air | طيران الرياض, landed in Islamabad for the first time, officially opening a new air link between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia. The inaugural flight, RX-660, arrived from Riyadh at Islamabad International Airport with 69 passengers and received a ceremonial water salute.

Riyadh Air is set to operate seven flights a week between Riyadh and Islamabad, providing a daily connection between the two countries. The airline will also begin three weekly Lahore-Riyadh flights from August 18, with the routes operated by Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners.

Pakistan has allowed 724 truckloads of humanitarian aid to enter Afghanistan through the Torkham border, providing food and other essential supplies to families affected by conflict and displacement. The UN thanked Pakistan for helping keep the humanitarian route open.

The Torkham crossing has remained closed for regular trade since October 2025 following deadly clashes and rising security tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan. The closure also disrupted Afghan transit cargo moving through Karachi.

UN officials said the humanitarian shipments were delivered to families in need amid worsening conditions and continued displacement. Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar welcomed the effort, saying Pakistan had helped ensure assistance reached people in Afghanistan who needed it.

Pakistan will provide the first deputy commander of the Saudi-led Multinational Maritime Defense Coalition as the alliance moves closer to activating its command structure and beginning operations. The decision was made at the coalition’s third planning meeting in Jeddah, attended by representatives from 39 countries.

The coalition will focus on maritime security in the Red Sea, Bab el-Mandeb Strait and Gulf of Aden, some of the world’s key shipping routes linking Asia, the Middle East and Europe. Islamabad witnessed a grand inauguration of the Yadgar-e-Fatah (Victory Memorial) on Independence Day, bringing together Pakistan’s armed forces, civil armed forces and representatives from Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan. President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir formally inaugurated the memorial at the National Memorial of the Battle of Haq in Sector H-8.

A major highlight was a spectacular Pakistan Air Force flypast, as fighter jets flew over the venue to loud cheers and applause from the crowd. Military and civil armed forces also took part in the ceremony, highlighting national unity and solidarity.

The memorial has been built as a lasting tribute to Pakistan’s military sacrifices and its stated victory against Indian aggression. Pakistan has asked Iran to cut the price of gas under the Iran-Pakistan pipeline project by up to 50% and has also proposed reducing the planned gas supply. Islamabad says demand for expensive imported gas remains weak, making the current price difficult for Pakistan’s energy sector to absorb.

The government has proposed a new pricing formula that could bring the gas price down to $4.67–$5.89 per mmBtu, depending on global oil prices, compared with the current rate of around $10.60 per mmBtu. Pakistan also wants the planned supply reduced from 750 million cubic feet per day, citing limited demand and existing LNG commitments with Qatar.

The $2.5 billion pipeline project has remained stalled for years due to US sanctions on Iran. Pakistan says it could move ahead if US President Donald Trump grants a sanctions waiver, while Islamabad and Tehran are now renegotiating the deal and seeking a solution to their long-running dispute.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has called India an “enemy of peace” and warned that Pakistan will not compromise on its water rights. Speaking at the inauguration of the Monument of Victory in Islamabad, he said “every drop” of Pakistan’s water is a red line and warned that Pakistan would respond if India does not reverse its decision to suspend the Indus Waters Treaty.

Shehbaz also paid tribute to Pakistan’s armed forces and the martyrs of Operation Haq, saying their performance had restored national pride. He stressed that Pakistan’s desire for peace should not be seen as weakness and said the country supports resolving disputes through the United Nations and principles of justice.

The prime minister also called for national unity, economic growth and greater use of modern technology to create opportunities for young Pakistanis. He highlighted Pakistan’s partnerships with Saudi Arabia and Türkiye, its support for Palestine and its efforts to promote peace and stability in the region.
