Women Journalists Association of Pakistan Strongly Condemns the Forced Dismissal of Senior Journalist Munizae Jahangir and Her Team
The Women Journalists Association of Pakistan (WJAP) strongly condemns the forced dismissal of renowned journalist, television anchor, and human rights advocate Munizae Jahangir from Aaj TV after 11 years of dedicated service, as well as the targeting of her distinguished 24-year journalistic career.
Munizae Jahangir has consistently upheld the highest standards of fearless, independent, and ethical journalism. Her abrupt and forced removal represents a serious blow to media freedom, editorial independence, and the right to free expression in Pakistan. Following in the footsteps of her late mother, renowned human rights defender Asma Jahangir, Munizae has remained committed to amplifying the voices of the marginalized and speaking truth to power.
The Women Journalists Association considers this action a direct attack on press freedom. It reflects a growing environment in which independent voices and impartial analysis are increasingly being pushed out of mainstream media.
The situation is particularly alarming for women journalists. At a time when women remain underrepresented in Pakistan's electronic media, targeting a senior and highly experienced journalist sends a discouraging message to women across the profession. Dismissing a journalist with an exemplary 24-year career is not only contrary to professional ethics but also exposes an increasingly authoritarian approach toward independent journalism.
The Women Journalists Association of Pakistan stands in full solidarity with Munizae Jahangir & her team and remains steadfast in supporting her pursuit of truth, justice, and press freedom.
