When imports, consumption and credit expand faster than the economy’s capacity to generate exports, revenues and foreign exchange, accumulated reserves become a short-lived cushion rather than a foundation for sustainable growth. The resulting depletion of buffers narrows policy space, intensifies external financing pressures and eventually forces corrective contraction. The durable alternative lies not in suppressing growth, but in re-engineering its underlying composition—from consumption-led expansion towards productivity, export competitiveness, investment and domestic resource mobilisation. Sustainable growth, therefore, requires building buffers faster than they are consumed; otherwise, each apparent recovery merely burns the fiscal and external space needed to withstand the next shock.
