Don't Leave Money on the Table For Free!
A few weeks ago I found out that I am leaving money on the table. HOW?
I consider myself as a beginner in the freelancing field, so I would name this incident as a part of the learning curve rather than an act of foolishness. so let me tell you what happened
I was approached by a client for an E-commerce store, he told me his niche his products and asked me for the work I have done in the past.
I sent him all the 8 websites I created previously.
he said okay, I am going to give the job to you.
so I asked him for basic requirements which I thought were enough to create a store.
after 2 days, he sent me a link saying that the UI of the website should be inspired by this store.
I went through the whole store and guess what.....
that store was designed with a custom theme.
I was already giving him a discount because of some past relations with him, but in this case I couldnt increase my pay because I had already agreed on one fix payment and I havent asked him for the kind of store he wants to create (I asumed that he needs a basic wordpress store, its not that much work). well that assumption took me down and I had to create that store for him for a price 3 folds less than what the project should cost.
as I said in the starting, I would not call it a foolishness, I will rather call it a part of the learning curve, but since then I have planned and implimented a few cautios steps in order to avoid such occurence again.
I have listed those steps below
1. Create Detailed Checklists of requirements and questions you ask your client:
- Start by crafting a checklist of questions and requirements you need from the client. It's like a project roadmap.
2. Double-Check with Texts:
- Send a summary of the requirements via text. This serves as a backup, ensuring you're both on the same page and acts as evidence in case of any disputes.
3. Document Everything:
- Keep a record of discussions, decisions, and requirements. It's like a project compass that keeps you on track.
4. Continuous Improvement:
- As you gain experience, keep enhancing your checklist. New insights and scenarios will help refine your process.
Remember, clarity upfront saves time, effort, and ensures you're paid fairly for your hard work! πͺ
