Moeen Faruqi's recent exhibition, titled 'Continuum,' showcased his newest paintings at the Canvas Gallery in Karachi. With a 30-year exploration of displacement and ambiguity, Faruqi takes the viewer on intricate pathways. His imagined and lived experiences collide within familiar yet disconnected scenarios, populated by unrelated individuals. Characters appear effortlessly in his compositions, transcending cultural and political contexts. Faruqi's art draws connections to the writings of Kundera, Kafka, Marquez, and Hamid, as well as the works of Beckmann and Saeed. It traverses between past and future, where memory and transformation intertwine. These paintings serve as an extension of Faruqi's life, family history, and artistic journey, recalling spaces of significance and blending private and public realms. Animals, like birds and cats, share the canvas with discomforting scenes, contributing to the discourse. Faruqi's process, witnessed through layered paint, reflects his yearning for truth and freedom from predefined norms. His art mirrors the complexities of transitioning societies, where contradictions, angst, and joy harmoniously coexist, akin to the concept of home. 'Continuum' was exhibited at Canvas Gallery from April 25 to May 4, 2023, providing viewers a glimpse into a captivating world.

Karachi: Amidst the bustling streets and diverse cultures, Ahmed Rabbani's artistic spirit soared, transcending the confines of his 20-year incarceration at Guantanamo Bay. When the paints ran dry, he improvised, harnessing the power of dirt, coffee grinds, and fragrant spices like turmeric from the prison canteen. Through strokes of a brush, he discovered solace and liberation from the Guantanamo shackles. Detained in 2002, Rabbani's identity was mistaken, falsely labeled as the notorious militant, Hassan Ghul. Locked away without trial, his art became a lifeline in the barren wasteland. In a mesmerizing exhibition, "The Unforgotten Moon: Liberating Art from Guantanamo Bay," Rabbani's raw creations intertwine with local artists' reinterpretations, amplifying his silent protest. Today, amidst curious gazes, Rabbani, wearing traditional attire, unveils his plans—a cookbook intertwined with memoirs, and a restaurant fueled by the taste of freedom. His artwork, steeped in hope and longing, defies the oppressive orange-clad existence he defied at Guantanamo.

This masjid has been drawing in many people for five-time daily prayers from the local community due to its unique ceiling adorned with a beautiful sky, and its carpet that looks like grass; all of which has been inspired by a verse in the Qur’an.
It was initially built in the 1910’s under the Ottoman Caliphate in the Yenice neighbourhood of Kırşehir and was named after the great Caliph of Muslims, Amir al-Mu’minin Sultan Abdülhamid II Khan; but as the decades went by, the masjid was neglected and dwindled into a state of disrepair. As such, it was recently demolished and replaced by the newly built Hamidiye Camii on the same site.
The artistic motifs inside the masjid were drawn and painted by an Azerbaijani architect, and it has certainly garnered some attention since it opened last year, drawing people from all over the city – and beyond – to see its inner beauty, and for prayers.
One congregant remarked: “It’s as if I felt like I was praying in the gardens of jannah (heaven).”
The Imam of the masjid, Sefa Ekinci said: “When I was assigned to this masjid as an imam, I started to gather as much information as I could about its history and also the developments that were done on the new project to date. The people involved in the project told me that they were inspired by Ayah (verse) 22 from Surah (chapter) al-Baqarah from the Holy Qur’an” which reads:
“(Allah) Who has made the earth a resting place for you, and the sky as a canopy, and sent down water (rain) from the sky and brought forth therewith fruits as a provision for you. Then do not set up rivals unto Allah (in worship) while you know (that He Alone has the right to be worshipped).”
