Pakistan has taken a significant step forward in advancing its internet and communication capabilities with the announcement of plans to launch a new satellite into space, following the successful deployment of the iCube Qamar satellite.
Named MM1, the upcoming satellite is scheduled for launch on May 30, according to a spokesperson from the Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (Suparco). The launch, to be conducted from Islamabad, marks a milestone for Pakistan's space endeavors.
The primary objective of the MM1 satellite is to enhance Pakistan's communication infrastructure. It is expected to play a crucial role in establishing a sophisticated communication network and meeting the growing demands of the telecom sector.
With the rapid increase in internet usage and the impending rollout of 5G technology, MM1 holds promise in ensuring better availability and reliability of services across the country. Its advanced capabilities are poised to address the rising demand for high-speed internet and seamless connectivity.
On May 3, Pakistan made its first foray into lunar exploration with the launch of the iCube Qamar satellite, in collaboration with China. Weighing approximately 7kg, the satellite was developed by the Electrical Engineering Department of the Institute of Space Technology (IST) in Islamabad over two years.
Suparco's successful launch of the first satellite into lunar orbit, linked to China's Chang'e 6 mission, marked Pakistan's entry into the international space race. This achievement made Pakistan the sixth country in the world to reach the moon.
Recently, iCube Qamar made history by transmitting its first images from the moon's orbit. These images offer a unique perspective of the lunar surface, showcasing Pakistan's growing prowess in space exploration.
