Pakistan to Roll Out 5G in 7 Major Cities Soon

Pakistan will begin rolling out 5G services in the coming months, starting with seven major cities, Federal Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunication Shaza Fatima Khawaja said Tuesday.

Speaking at the inauguration of the 26th ITCN Asia Expo at the Expo Centre Karachi, the minister acknowledged the challenges of introducing 5G but said steps were underway to improve nationwide internet access. Her remarks come months after the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority cautioned in its 2024 annual report that the country’s transition to 5G would be difficult despite rising broadband usage.

Khawaja highlighted the financial strain of adopting next-generation technology but insisted that digital development remained a priority. She pointed to a recent agreement with Saudi Arabia, describing information technology as its “core element,” to strengthen Pakistan’s digital infrastructure and drive economic growth.

The minister also linked digital progress to broader economic improvements, noting that Pakistan had moved past default concerns, with inflation easing and macroeconomic indicators showing stability. “Karachi carries the weight of the country’s economic development,” she said, while adding that Pakistan’s resilience had earned international recognition under the “Digital Pakistan” initiative.

She stressed the role of the Special Investment Facilitation Council in improving the investment climate and confirmed that the federal cabinet had approved Pakistan’s first Artificial Intelligence policy. Work is underway to train between 500,000 and one million young people in AI and cybersecurity by year-end, she said. “Those who know the right use of technology will replace traditional positions,” Khawaja added, urging youth to embrace digital opportunities.

On concerns about poor mobile and data services, she explained that two submarine cables had recently been damaged in the Red Sea near Jeddah, disrupting connectivity. She said the government was working to expand submarine cable capacity and fiberisation to improve reliability.

PM to Virtually Attend Signing of Financing Facility Agreement for Circular Debt Reduction

The Central Power Purchasing Agency (Guarantee) Limited (CPPA-G), on behalf of the Ministry of Energy (Power Division), has invited banks and power sector entities to the signing ceremony of a financing facility agreement aimed at reducing circular debt in the power sector.

According to CPPA-G, the event is scheduled to take place on Wednesday, September 24, 2025, at the Prime Minister’s Office in Islamabad. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is expected to attend the ceremony virtually.

In its communication to chief executives of banks and power companies, CPPA-G underscored the importance of the agreement, describing it as a significant milestone for the energy sector. The agency requested the participation of key stakeholders, calling their presence “essential” to the occasion.

Details of the ceremony’s schedule will be confirmed following coordination with the Prime Minister’s Office, CPPA-G added.

High-Level Saudi Delegation to Visit Pakistan Next Month

A high-level Saudi delegation is expected to visit Pakistan in October, sources from the Ministry of Commerce told ProPakistani.

The visit is anticipated to focus on boosting trade and investment ties between the two countries.

Furthermore, the possibility of a visit by the Saudi Crown Prince to Pakistan cannot be ruled out in the near future, according to sources. During the Saudi delegation’s visit, a Pakistan-Saudi Business Forum will be held to discuss opportunities for cooperation and trade expansion.

In a meeting to assess the prospects of increasing trade with Saudi Arabia, Federal Minister for Commerce, Jam Kamal Khan, along with other relevant officials, will participate in the discussions, sources revealed.

The meeting will explore potential Saudi investment in Pakistan’s infrastructure, oil sector, and digital economy. There is also expected to be an emphasis on enhancing collaboration in areas like information technology, energy, technology, and SMEs.

The relationship between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia is once again warming up, according to the Ministry of Commerce. Both countries have agreed to accelerate their efforts to strengthen cooperation in the trade sector, sources added.
