New York: Pakistan, through its Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, has strongly advocated for peace and de-escalation in the Middle East, co-sponsoring a draft resolution with Russia and China at the UN Security Council.
The resolution calls for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire in the wake of recent US strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities, which followed a series of Israeli attacks on the same sites.
Addressing a special meeting of the UN Security Council, Ambassador Ahmad unequivocally condemned the US strikes on Iran's nuclear facilities, asserting that these actions, coming "on the heels of a series of brazen attacks by Israel," constitute a clear breach of international law and pose a "grave threat" to regional and global security. He emphasized that the specific targeting of nuclear facilities under International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) safeguards is a serious violation.
The joint resolution put forth by Pakistan, Russia, and China urges all parties to refrain from further escalation, demands the urgent protection of civilians and civilian infrastructure, and supports a diplomatic path forward on the Iranian nuclear issue that is acceptable to all stakeholders.
