ISLAMABAD, Aug 26 (APP):Federal Health Minister, Mustafa Kamal on Wednesday said an air-conditioning unit allegedly exploded in the intensive care ward for children at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), triggering a fire that claimed the lives of 14 newborn babies.

According to a statement issued by the Ministry of National Health Services, the minister said the presence of oxygen in the ward intensified the blaze.

Mustafa Kamal expressed deep grief over the deaths and said the relevant administration and law-enforcement agencies had reached the site to ascertain the cause of the fire and establish the facts.

The health secretary and other ministry officials were also present at PIMS, he added.

The minister expressed solidarity with the bereaved families and prayed for the departed souls, seeking patience and strength for the families to bear the irreparable loss.

Fourteen infants were killed in a fire that broke out in the gynaecology ward of the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (Pims) early on Wednesday.

Footage aired on television showed rescue workers using ladders and going through broken windows to access the affected area.

In a statement, the Islamabad administration said that the fire broke out on the third floor of the Mother and Child Hospital’s ward. It said that rescue teams rushed to the scene, with six fire brigade vehicles and four ambulances taking part in the rescue operation.

At least, nine people, including three children, were safely rescued after rainwater entered a house in Gulraiz Phase-I, Rawalpindi, Rescue 1122 said on Wednesday.

According to Rescue 1122, six adults and three children had become trapped inside the house near Abbasia Chowk following heavy rainfall.
