Nigeria has repaid the $3.4 billion loan it acquired from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) during the COVID-19 pandemic ahead of schedule, making itself completely debt-free from that emergency funding.

According to a report by Voice of Africa, Nigeria completed the repayment on April 30, 2025 — a move that not only reflects strong fiscal discipline but also indicates effective debt management.

It is worth noting that at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, Nigeria, like many developing economies, faced severe economic challenges, including a drastic drop in oil prices and increasing public health crises. In response to these challenges, Nigeria approached the IMF and received an emergency loan under the Rapid Financing Instrument (RFI) framework.

The RFI is a financial tool that provides swift support to countries facing acute balance of payments pressures.

Nigeria used the funds to strengthen its healthcare system, protect vulnerable communities, and stabilize key sectors of the economy. The loan played a vital role in preventing economic collapse during the most critical months of the pandemic.

Nigeria’s early repayment of the loan has drawn praise globally and is being viewed as a testament to its prudent economic management.
