I appeared on Neo TV to discuss the strategic significance of the Makkah Pact between Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye.

My key takeaways:

🔹 Beyond “Islamic NATO”: I see this less as a NATO replica and more as an emerging form of middle-power security cooperation and collective deterrence. In the times when USA has failed to provide security umbrella to its client states.

🔹 Strategic autonomy: At a time of growing uncertainty around traditional security guarantees, regional powers are increasingly seeking to build and diversify their own security partnerships.

🔹 Complementary capabilities: Pakistan brings military and strategic deterrence; Türkiye brings advanced defence-industrial and technological capabilities; Saudi Arabia contributes financial, energy and geostrategic weight.

The larger question is:

Are middle powers moving from being consumers of great-power security to becoming producers of their own security architecture?

The Makkah Pact may prove to be an important case study in this emerging multipolar order.

My research was focused on Pakistan’s role in the emerging multipolar world order and evolving patterns of reciprocity in Pakistan–Russia relations.

The conference brought together scholars and practitioners from both countries, reinforcing growing academic and institutional engagement and shared interest in deeper cooperation.
