Mohmand Dam Project – Progress Update (800MW)

Latest construction progress from the Mohmand Dam, one of Pakistan’s most vital water and energy infrastructure projects!

Located on River Swat in the Tribal District Mohmand, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the 213-meter-high dam is set to become the 5th highest Concrete-Faced Rockfill Dam (CFRD) in the world. With a storage capacity of 1.29 MAF, it will irrigate 18,233 acres of new land and enhance water supply to 160,000 acres of existing farmland.
The dam will generate 800 MW of clean hydropower, adding 2.86 billion units of affordable electricity to the national grid every year.
It will also help control floods in Peshawar, Charsadda, and Nowshera, and provide 300 million gallons of drinking water daily to Peshawar city.

Check out these latest on-site photos showing steady and determined progress by the teams working round-the-clock. A major step towards a water-secure and energy-resilient Pakistan.

On May 23, the downstream section of the A3 diversion tunnel at the Balakot Hydropower Station officially commenced. The current phase includes 89.91 meters of tunnel excavation, marking a significant advancement that will serve as a slag discharge channel for the regulating well and pressure shaft, enhancing overall construction efficiency and safety.
As the largest hydropower project planned by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Energy Development Authority, Balakot Hydropower Station will feature a 300MW installed capacity with three mixed-flow turbines. Upon completion, it will contribute to alleviating the regional power shortage and increasing Pakistan’s share of clean, renewable energy.
