Pakistan defeated Sri Lanka by four wickets in the first Test at Galle on Thursday and with the victory, the visitors also set a record.

The win was Pakistan’s 10th — in 28 matches — in Sri Lanka, putting them ahead of India (nine wins in 24 matches) and England (nine wins in 18 matches) with the most wins in the country.

While 10 wins may seem like an ordinary thing, but it is not as Sri Lanka is a very strong team at home.

The win was not only a milestone for Pakistan but also for Pakistani skipper Babar Azam as he entered the elite list of Pakistani captains.

The win was Azam’s seventh away Test win in nine matches as a captain, which puts him ahead of Saleem Malik (six wins in nine matches) and Wasim Akram (six wins in 16 matches).

Now, Azam is only behind the great Misbah-ul-Haq who guided Pakistan to 13 away victories in 32 matches. Considering Pakistan were not even allowed to host matches in the country during Misbah’s tenure, his achievement puts him ahead of all as Pakistan majorly played away Test under his captaincy.

Earlier today, Pakistan took a 1-0 lead after defeating Sri Lanka thanks largely to a brilliant double ton by Saud Shakeel in the first innings.

Pakistan had resumed their run-chase of 131 runs at 48-3 with Babar and Imam-ul-Haq on the crease.

Azam scored 24 in 28 balls, with the help of five fours, before being trapped by Prabath Jayasuriya in front of the stumps.

Saud Shakeel also couldn't stay at the crease till the end as he was dismissed after scoring 30 runs in 38 balls.

Imam played an impressive knock and remained unbeaten on 50 runs, which included four fours and a six.

Agha Salman smacked a six on the very first ball he faced to help Pakistan get over the line.

The second and final Test will begin at Singhalese Sports Club, Colombo on July 24.

Zaka Ashraf, the chairman of newly appointed management committee of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), has offered former Test cricketer Mohammad Hafeez to become national team's chief selector.

According to the sources, Ashraf met Hafeez, who took retirement in 2022, on Thursday to offer him key post in the new setup. The cricketer-turned-analyst asked for some time to think about the offer.

During the meeting, Hafeez congratulated Ashraf for becoming the new head of PCB.

"Zaka Ashraf is a good administrator. I honestly respect him a lot. I will definitely consider a good offer to serve Pakistan cricket," the former all-rounder said.

Reportedly, current chief selector Haroon Rashid will be removed from his post soon.

Apart from Hafeez, former Test cricketers Younis Khan, Mohsin Hassan Khan, Saleem Yousuf and Shoaib Akhtar are also likely to get certain positions in the new selection setup.

The federal government, on July 5, had appointed Ashraf as the chairman a new management committee.

The federal government approved the formation of the committee through the circulation of a summary.

The 10-member committee has been placed in charge for a period of four months.

A new chief election commissioner was also appointed with Mahmood Iqbal replacing Ahmed Shehzad Farooq Rana.

The names of the 10-member committee are as follows:

Zaka Ashraf (chairman), Kaleem Ullah Khan, Ashfaq Akhtar, Musaddiq Islam, Azmat Parvez, Zaheer Abbas, Khurram Karim Somroo, Khuwaja Nadeem, Mustafa Ramday and Zulfiqar Malik

In a major achievement, China on Sunday stunned five-time defending champions Japan 73-71 to win their first women's Asia Cup basketball title in more than a decade as Giant centre Han Xu sank 26 points.

During the match, New York Liberty's Han also made 10 rebounds and two assists at Sydney Olympic Park, while fellow superstar Li Meng poured in 17 points to hand world number two China its 12th crown and first since 2011.

The victory snapped Japan's dominance in the tournament dating back to Bangkok in 2013 and ended the Tokyo Olympic silver medallist's dream of making it six in a row.

No nation other than Japan, China or South Africa has won the Asia Cup since its inception in 1965.

Hosts Australia took bronze for the third consecutive tournament after crushing New Zealand 81-59.

"It feels unreal. We didn't expect we could be champions before the tournament started," said China coach Zheng Wei.

"At our training camp before the tournament we had some problems like injuries and not every player joining us at the start of the camp. But our team has got better and better.

"I'm very proud them."

Weina Jin scored an early bucket for China but Japan quickly found their stride in an intense first quarter that ended level-pegging at 17-17.

With tournament MVP Han, who towers 6 feet 10 inches (2.08 metres), leading the way, China went on a 7-0 run in the second stanza to pull clear, but again a relentless Japan came roaring back.

With lightning-fast transition and aggressive defence, Japan went 18-2 to reach half-time 35-26 in front.

China lifted the tempo in the third stanza and edged a point clear, but Japan weathered the storm to take a 51-48 lead into the home stretch.

But in a nail-biting finish, the Chinese held their nerve to triumph in a game that went to the wire.

"We tried hard, all the players did well," said Japan coach Toru Onzuka.

"We can learn from this (Chinese) team, they are a great team."

All four semi-finalists in the eight-team competition secured a place at the 2024 Paris Olympic qualifying tournament.

Former Pakistan seamer Mohammad Amir opened up about the possibility of playing in the Indian Premier League (IPL) in an interview with a local news channel on Monday.

Amir, 31, is set to acquire his UK citizenship next year due to his marriage to a British national Narjis Khan.

Amir — winner of the 2009 T20 World Cup and Champions Trophy 2017 — stated firmly that he will not play for England because he has already represented Pakistan and that’s where his loyalties lie — and about IPL, the pacer said he does not want to get ahead of time.

"First, I will not play for England. I have played for Pakistan. Second (talking of IPL), there is one more year to go. What will be the scenario at that time... I always say that I go step by step. We don't know what will happen tomorrow, and I start thinking about playing IPL in 2024," he said.

"When I get my passport ...whatever the best opportunity will be and what I will get...I will avail it," he added.

It must be noted that Azhar Mehmood is the only Pakistani cricketer to have ever played in IPL while being a UK citizen.

Earlier today, Amir signed with Durban Qalandards to participate in the Zim Afro T10 League 2023.

Eight Pakistan cricketers including the 31-year-old are set to feature in the inaugural edition of the Zim Afro T10 League this year.

The Iranian government has refused to send a new ambassador to Sweden after a protester burned a Quran outside a mosque in the capital, Stockholm.

An Iraqi-born refugee burnt the Muslim holy book outside a mosque on the first day of Eid al-Adha.

Swedish police charged him with agitation against an ethnic or national group last week.

Iran's foreign minister, Hossein Amirabdollahian, blamed the government for granting him the protest permit.

Plans to burn copies of the Quran have sparked riots in Sweden in recent months. Police had rejected similar protest applications recently, but courts then ruled that they should be allowed on freedom of expression grounds.

Muslims consider the Quran the sacred word of God and view any intentional damage or show of disrespect towards it as deeply offensive.

Mr Amirabdollahian said despite appointing a new ambassador, Tehran would not be sending them.

"The process of dispatching them has been held off due to the Swedish government's issuing of a permit to desecrate the Holy Koran", he said in a statement on Twitter.

Iraq's foreign ministry also asked its Swedish counterpart to extradite the man who burned the Quran. They argued that since he still holds an Iraqi citizenship, he should face trial in Baghdad.

After the incident, thousands of Iraqi protesters raided the Swedish embassy in Iraq at the instigation of the the populist Shia cleric, Moqtaha al-Sadr. They left after fifteen minutes when a security force was deployed.

The prime minister of Sweden, Ulf Kristersson, denounced the raid on the embassy, but also said it was time for Sweden to reflect on its identity.

"It is of course completely unacceptable for people to unlawfully break into Swedish embassies in other countries. I think we also need to reflect in Sweden. It is a serious security situation, there is no reason to insult other people," he said.

Following an emergency meeting of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation in Jeddah on Sunday, the Saudi-based organisation called for member states to take "unified and collective measures" to stop countries burning copies of Islam's holy book.

The secretary general, Hissein Brahim Taha said the burnings of the Quran were "not mere ordinary Islamophobia incidents" and urged countries worldwide to adhere to international law "which clearly prohibits any advocacy of religious hatred".

Morocco, Kuwait, Jordan and the United Arab Emirates - among other countries - have recalled their ambassadors to Stockholm following the incident.

It has also sparked anger in other Muslim-majority nations including Turkey - a Nato member which has a say over whether Sweden also gains membership.

On Wednesday, the country's foreign minister tweeted that it was "unacceptable to allow anti-Islam protests in the name of freedom of expression".
