Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev signed a law on Monday prohibiting individuals from wearing clothing in public places that covers their faces, joining a trend in several Central Asian countries to restrict forms of Islamic dress.

The text of the law says clothing that “interferes with facial recognition” will be banned in public, with exemptions for medical purposes, in adverse weather conditions and at sporting and cultural events.

The legislation, one in a series of wider amendments signed into law on Monday, does not explicitly mention religion or types of religious dress.

Tokayev has previously praised the legislation as an opportunity to celebrate ethnic identity in Kazakhstan, a majority-Muslim country and former Soviet republic.

Ireland has become the first European Union (EU) country to legally ban the import of all Israeli goods. The Irish government has agreed to move forward with a bill that would make it illegal to import products from Israel.

This decision follows a ruling from the International Court of Justice (ICJ) last year, which stated that Israel’s control over the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and the Gaza Strip is against international law.

An Irish government spokesperson explained, “The government believes this is something we must do under international law.” The ban will apply to items such as fruits, vegetables, and timber that originate from these settlements.

India’s attempt to disrupt Pakistan’s external trade by banning ships carrying Pakistani goods from anchoring at its ports has failed to yield the desired impact, according to shipping industry representatives.

On May 2, India imposed a ban on ships carrying goods originating from or destined for Pakistan, barring them from entering Indian ports or transiting through Indian territory. The move followed military aggression under ‘Operation Sindoor’ launched on May 7, which ended within four days due to Pakistan’s forceful retaliation.

While India initially sought to hurt Pakistan’s trade flows, the outcome fell short of expectations. Shipping companies reportedly adapted by separating cargo bound for and from Pakistan, thereby avoiding dependence on Indian ports.

China has renewed $3.4 billion in loans to Pakistan to help the country meet its commitments to the International Monetary Fund (IMF). This support includes rolling over a $2.1 billion deposit held by Pakistan's central bank for a three-year period and refinancing a $1.3 billion commercial loan. The rollover is crucial for Pakistan to maintain its foreign exchange reserves, which are a key requirement of the IMF. The funds, combined with other recent inflows, are expected to bring Pakistan's reserves to around $14 billion, aligning with the IMF's target.
