Now that we stand on the cusp of the metaverse, we’re at an era-defining crossroads: who will be the architects of this new world?

The technologies and workflows that were once the preserve of big studios with multi-million dollar budgets have become democratized, giving rise to a new wave of content creators.

Often releasing material on streaming platforms like YouTube, these creators are breaking records and garnering plaudits for their imagination and innovation.

At one time, using real-time technology in film and television production was considered experimental. Now, it’s being adopted across the entire workflow and used for a multitude of content.

Real-time workflows are impacting projects at every stage of the creative lifecycle, from conceptual writing and location scouting to production design and final-frame visual effects.

https://www.unrealengine.com/en-US/blog/real-time-round-up-the-metaverse-and-emerging-2022-trends

While Unreal Engine is the gateway for many creators, the technology sits at the heart of an entire ecosystem of engine-agnostic creative tools and services that are open and accessible for anyone to use.

Their vision is that this interconnected hub of applications, platforms, and marketplaces will provide everything creators need to build the virtual worlds of the future.

What does the future hold for real-time technology in 2022? From transmedia marketing to the metaverse, we take a look at some emerging trends.

Since the advent of Augmented Reality, one of the categories to most embrace this new technology has been that of architects and designers.

These professionals were already accustomed to design 3D projects and to deal with 3D models, so they have always had a lot of material to be fed to Augmented Reality software.

Even tough 3D models have been at the base of almost any architectural and civil engineering project in the last two decades, for a long time many professionals have continued working with renderings, a bidimensional representation of the project made using the 3D models, basically pictures from a few different points of view of the 3D representation.

Over time, this way of presenting the project has begun to hold out against professionals in the sector and their clients, essentially for two reasons. The first is that with the renderings many details and many sensations related to the visualization of the project are lost; the second is that with the renderings one renounces to fully exploit the potential of a 3D model, especially since BIM has begun to establish itself.

https://www.inglobetechnologies.com/aumented-reality-for-architecture-use-cases/

Augmented Reality can support Architects and BIM Managers in a very wide array of activities, from project design to assets management. The wide availability of 3D models and BIM models makes the adoption of Augmented Reality tools easier today than it was a few years ago.

Also mobile devices are becoming more and more powerful and they come now with embedded hardware that can be useful to create photogrammetric reconstructions, like the Lidar.

In this scenario AR-media is the ideal tool to build and publish Augmented Reality projects for Architecture, as it requires no coding skills and allows the user to create AR content with a visual, simple workflow.

Augmented Reality for Architecture use cases offer a wide range of opportunities for improving both project design and visualization.

Existing AI models do a good job understanding images, and are getting better at video understanding.

However, if we want to build new, immersive experiences for AR and VR, we need AI models that are multimodal — models that can take audio, video, and text signals all at once and create a much richer understanding of the environment.

https://ai.facebook.com/blog/ai-driven-acoustic-synthesis-for-augmented-and-virtual-reality-experiences/

AViTAR and VIDA are currently based on only a single image. In the future, we want to explore using video and other dynamics to capture the acoustic properties of a space.

This will help bring us closer to our goal of creating multimodal AI that understands real-world environments and how people experience them.

Meta AI researchers, in collaboration with an audio specialist from Meta’s Reality Labs and researchers from the University of Texas at Austin, are open-sourcing three new models for audio-visual understanding of human speech and sounds in video that are designed to push us toward this reality at a faster rate.

What is required for further development, AI models that understand a person’s physical surroundings based on both how they look and how things sound.

For example, there’s a big difference between how a concert would sound in a large venue versus in your living room.

That’s because the geometry of a physical space, the materials and surfaces in the area, and the proximity of where the sounds are coming from all factor into how we hear audio.

Traditionally, the home building industry and primary home sales market have relied on still images and animated walkthroughs, but there is value in taking a next-gen approach to customer engagement.

Securing advance sales is absolutely crucial for large-scale residential property developers so it’s vital that they’re able to present their homes to prospective buyers in a compelling way before they’re even built.

Accelerated by the restrictions caused by the pandemic, the home building industry has begun to adopt innovations like real-time technology.

https://www.unrealengine.com/en-US/spotlights/shaping-the-future-of-home-building-and-real-estate-sales-with-unreal-engine?sessionInvalidated=true

Not only does this create a more realistic and immersive experience for buyers, it also brings transparency–there’s no hiding or trying to make rooms look bigger with clever angles in a true-to-size real-time environment.

Real-time technology is already proving to be an incredibly effective sales tool for developers and brokers in the property world, while also helping them to fine-tune their designs. And while the focus is currently on the new build market, the work that has already been done shows that there is also huge potential for this innovative approach to expand further into the market for existing homes.

Home builders are using Unreal Engine to create interactive platforms that enable buyers to look around new homes before developers have even built them.

HABITAT-MATTERPORT 3D RESEARCH DATASET FOR TRAINING EMBODIED AI...

AI models in computer vision and natural language processing are typically trained with text, images, audios, and videos curated from the internet. But embodied AI, the study and development of intelligent systems with a physical or virtual embodiment (robots and egocentric personal assistants), has different needs.

Facebook AI, in collaboration with Matterport, are making available a Matterport open source licensed data set, the largest ever data set of indoor 3D scans, to benefit the research community.

Habitat-Matterport 3D Research Dataset (HM3D) is a collection of 1,000 Habitat-compatible 3D scans made up of accurately scaled residential spaces such as apartments, multifamily housing, and single-family homes, as well as commercial spaces like office buildings and retail stores.

https://ai.facebook.com/blog/introducing-the-habitat-matterport-3d-research-data-set-for-training-embodied-ai/

With this data set, embodied AI agents like home robots and AI assistants can be trained to understand the complexities of real-world environments, recognizing objects, rooms, and spaces, or learning how to navigate and follow instructions — all in contexts that are vastly different from one another.

To carry out complex tasks like finding misplaced objects or retrieving physical ones, an embodied AI agent needs to construct maps and episodic memory representations, understand speech and audio cues, and exhibit sophisticated motor control if it has to go up and down stairs.

HM3D is free and available now for academic, non-commercial research. Access it here:

https://matterport.com/habitat-matterport-3d-research-dataset

Data sets used to train embodied AI have been in short supply. Now, Facebook AI is partnering with Matterport to make available to the academic research community Matterport’s open-sourced data set of indoor 3D scans.

For rapidly expanding businesses, the growing pains often extend to their IT infrastructure. Award-winning architecture firm Lake | Flato is addressing this issue with a dose of NVIDIA RTX graphics and virtualization technologies.

https://resources.nvidia.com/en-us-general-aec/lake-flato-a40?lx=NlVLvC&contentType=blog

Lake|Flato currently has 135 employees, many of whom are power users of programs such as Autodesk AutoCAD and Revit and Enscape, and it’s looking to expand to 200 employees. With its PCs consuming about 300 watts each, electrical upgrades would’ve cost the company about half a million dollars.

Instead, with the help of IT services company Whitehat Virtual Technologies, they tested virtual desktop infrastructure powered by NVIDIA A40 GPUs combined with NVIDIA RTX Virtual Workstation (vWS) software.

The setup achieved similar performance running the energy-intensive apps in a virtualized environment as their current NVIDIA RTX-powered desktop workstations.

The NVIDIA RTX VWS-enabled VDI solution powered by NVIDIA A40 has nearly the same overall performance compared to our dedicated workstation-grade desktops, and only uses a fraction of the power.

ARCHITECTURE THAT CARES: HOW 12 INTERNATONAL DESIGN FIRMS PUT PEOPLE INTO THE HEART OF THEIR DESIGN...

Will global sustainability targets affect construction? What makes an environment feel safe? How does it feel to move through spaces with a disability?

As part of this year’s London Festival of Architecture, 12 practices including Foster + Partners, BDP, Morris+Company, and others were challenged to answer these questions and more by connecting their projects to a central theme: CARE.

https://www.twinmotion.com/en-US/news/architecture-that-cares-how-12-firms-put-people-into-the-heart-of-their-design

To do this, the architects needed to consider what it meant to design with people in mind—whether that involved helping children feel less like patients at a hospice, or producing the low-carbon neighborhood of the future.

To make each idea feel more real, Twinmotion’s archviz tools were used to turn BIM and CAD data into powerful visuals complete with animated humans, gorgeous greenery, and weather effects.

Can you visualize architecture that cares? Watch how these 12 practices did as part of this year’s London Festival of Architecture.

S'Winter Station project Unites Upcycling Materials, Automated Manufacturing and Virtual Reality!!

The construction industry has experienced severe changes in recent decades. Historically, it counted on abundant labor and a false notion that natural resources were infinite, but nowadays the sector has struggled to find innovations that will allow it to become more sustainable, especially considering its enormous impact and importance in the world.

https://www.archdaily.com/980019/a-pavilion-that-unites-upcycling-materials-automated-manufacturing-and-virtual-reality

Where a unique textile-concrete panel might take 3-4 days to fabricate, using augmented reality the team was able to manipulate hundreds of digital panels on top of physical models instantaneously.

Beyond prototype models, augmented and virtual reality was also used in order to refine errors that might’ve occurred during the design process. 1:1 scale models were projected in conjunction with physical space in order to test feasibility.

The three-dimensional visualization, therefore, transcends the rendering, constituting a key component for an increase in process efficiency.

Although on a reduced scale, this project shows interesting possibilities regarding the upcycling of materials and, above all, innovative methods of drawing, prototyping and construction.

The S'Winter Station project relied on existing visualization and manufacturing technology for its completion.

Real-time technology meets real-estate development...

Effective visual experiences are key to stakeholder engagement on projects like "Co-op Live". By leveraging real-time technology, the scope of visual experiences it’s possible to deliver increases exponentially.

XR technology allows for all options to be open to the clients, from media production to interactive and immersive experientials.

https://www.unrealengine.com/en-US/spotlights/digital-replica-of-co-op-live-music-venue-strikes-the-right-chord

The virtual media produced by Soluis has enabled the project team at OVG to more easily communicate with the wide and growing group of stakeholders.

This has been successful in conveying the design and atmosphere of each entertainment space, as well as their proximity to the main performances.

Each of the virtual cinematic tours is being used online and in the marketing suite, where the media is displayed on large screens that maximize the impact of discussions with visitors.

There is even an immersive, lightweight online tour being used by the sales team to transport visitors into each space.

“Now that the virtual destination has been built, the possibilities are open to all engagement scenarios that may arise in the future,” says Grant.

Tasked with visualizing a new music venue, Soluis created a virtual version of the arena in Unreal Engine.

The metaverse is coming, one way or another. The future of the internet will be more human than the way we experience it today — more physical, interactive, and speech-based than flat screens filled with text and images.

https://nickclegg.medium.com/making-the-metaverse-what-it-is-how-it-will-be-built-and-why-it-matters-3710f7570b04

It won’t be ownable, by Meta or anyone else, just as today’s internet isn’t. Meta has been upfront about the role it hopes to play in developing and establishing these new technologies, and how it is investing heavily to make them a reality. But it is being equally open about the manner in which it wants to go about developing them: collaboratively, transparently, and in full recognition of the social responsibilities inherent in the endeavor.

The metaverse will bring with it huge potential for social and economic progress. And it will bring risks and challenges, many of which can be anticipated. Our hope is that the lessons of previous technological advances can be learned and that the rules, standards and norms that will govern the metaverse can be developed in tandem with the development of the technologies themselves.

The metaverse is a logical evolution. It’s the next generation of the internet — a more immersive, 3D experience.

Concrete is the most widely used engineered material in the world, with billions of tons produced annually. Cement in concrete is a major source of carbon emissions globally, accounting for 8 percent of carbon emissions. Thus, reducing the emissions from concrete will have an impact that reaches well beyond data center construction.

https://tech.fb.com/engineering/2022/04/sustainable-concrete/

Tech at Meta has found a way to do this by using artificial intelligence (AI) to generate a concrete mix design that reduces the use of cement — without compromising strength requirements.

In collaboration with researchers at UIUC, we've developed an AI model to optimize for strong, sustainable concrete mixtures.

From design reviews with clients to construction rehearsals, virtual reality has proved its value in the architectural, engineering, and construction industry. Viewing 3D models in a realistic, virtual 3D environment brings numerous benefits to design and visualization workflows.

NVIDIA is driving the future of the Extended-Reality Paradigm with CloudXR, enabling users to virtually work from anywhere without having to physically connect to powerful workstations. With CloudXR, professionals can experience benefits like the ability to view building designs without physical mockups or visualize a multitude of materials and surfaces in various lighting conditions.

https://resources.nvidia.com/en-us-general-aec/cloudxr-aec?lx=NlVLvC

Architects using untethered VR headsets can freely move around digital building models without being constrained by cables. Teams can even send an inexpensive lightweight VR headset to customers and colleagues located a thousand miles away, so they can join the discussion using CloudXR’s bidirectional audio for collaboration. Construction teams can more quickly and easily plan and rehearse construction workflows before tackling them in real life to identify risks and improve safety. Similarly, service and maintenance training simulations in VR help technicians understand work processes more effectively than reading a manual or watching a video.

NVIDIA CloudXR lets AEC professionals view building designs without physical mockups, or visualize materials and surfaces in various lighting conditions.

Over the next decade, the HOK team’s goal is to use architectural visualization technologies to document a multitude of future restorative states for this project. This will enable client partners to walk through the virtual Centre Block building to experience and assess future design stages and strategies, including the pre-demolition, post-demolition, and pre-occupancy phases of the project.

The HOK team is currently also working on an XR platform that will layer design strategies directly on top of existing spaces within the real Centre Block. This interactive experience will facilitate the layering of design, historical retrograde, and service upgrades on top of existing spaces within the building itself.
