Additionally, institutions that are exempt from the aforementioned tax have received property tax notices from the district municipal corporation (DMC) South. DMC South sent the Chief Minister House a property tax notice for Rs15,770,757 in an amazing "feat of efficiency."
In a similar vein, the municipality has sent out dozens of property tax recovery notices to federal and provincial government-owned properties. In addition to the CM House, notices for property taxes were sent to the administrations of the Chief Secretary House, General Post Office, Urdu Dictionary Board, National Academy of Performing Arts (NAPA), and numerous significant federal and provincial buildings.
However, all federal and provincial buildings are exempt from taxation under the Sindh Urban Immovable Property Tax Act of 1958. Additionally, residential homes with a maximum length of 120 yards and residential flats with a maximum size of 600 square feet are exempt from this tax.
The authority to collect property taxes from the Excise Department has recently been given to the District Municipal Corporations under the Sindh Local Government Department by the Government of Sindh. The Local Government Department is receiving assistance from the Excise Department in this process. Similar circumstances occurred last month in India, where government departments received a lot of jibes and criticism on social media after property tax notices were sent to historic buildings like the Taj Mahal.
This year, government properties and estates exempt from property tax in Karachi have received property tax challans. Houses in slums all over the city, including Korangi, Orangi, and Malir, for which there is no tax, have also received property tax notices. This new tax bill is causing a lot of fear and anxiety in the people who live in these areas. The Chief Minister's House and other significant institutions, such as Napa and the Urdu Dictionary Board, have also received property tax in this manner.
