Maple Leaf Rag - Piano presentation by SOVAPA student ft. Hasan Yousuf Ali

At the School of Visual and Performing Arts (SOVAPA), performance is paired with context — giving students an understanding of the legacies they interpret.

Maple Leaf Rag, composed by Scott Joplin in 1899, is among the most influential works of the ragtime era. Often called the “King of Ragtime,” Joplin’s music helped shape a distinctly American sound at the turn of the 20th century.

Here, Hasan Yousuf Ali, our second-year student, performs the piece in its original ragtime spirit — a balance of rhythmic vitality and lyrical charm.

Fly me to the Moon - Guitar presentation

At the School of Visual and Performing Arts (SOVAPA), students explore music not only through performance but also through an understanding of its history and context.

Fly Me to the Moon was composed by Bart Howard in 1954, originally titled “In Other Words.” While first introduced by Kaye Ballard, it was Frank Sinatra’s 1964 recording with Count Basie’s orchestra that gave the song its enduring legacy.

Here, Yasir and Sufyan, from the 2nd and 3rd year, present their own instrumental interpretation of this timeless piece — a study in both discipline and expression.

SOVAPA – School of Visual and Performing Arts presents a student-led rendition of Raag Bhairon, one of the most profound morning ragas of the Bhairon Thaat. Marked by its sampooran structure, with Dha as Vadi and Re as Samvadi, Raag Bhairon evokes a meditative stillness, often described as austere yet deeply devotional.

This presentation features a Bandish set in Jhaptal, 10 beat cycle, highlighting the raga’s nuanced melodic movements (pakar: Ga–Ma–Dha–Pa; Ga–Ma–Pa–Ga–Ma–Re–Sa) and the interplay between melodic architecture and rhythmic sophistication.

Through this performance, our vocal students engage with the timeless grammar of Hindustani classical music, embodying SOVAPA’s vision of bridging rigorous pedagogy with artistic exploration.

Participants :
Uzma on vocals
Ali Raza on vocals
Asher on vocals
