Faisal Mosque to Undergo Major Renovation After 36 Years

Saudi Arabia has expressed its intention to assist the Capital Development Authority (CDA) in the renovation of the iconic Faisal Mosque in Islamabad, nearly four decades after its completion.

Originally conceived following King Faisal Abdul Aziz’s visit to Pakistan in 1966, the mosque was designed by Turkish architect Vedat Dalokay and completed in 1988. Since then, it has become a symbol of Islamabad and a popular destination for both worshippers and tourists.

Now, the structure is in need of extensive repair and maintenance work. A memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the Saudi government, the Ministry of Interior, and CDA is expected to be signed soon to formalize the support.

Chairman CDA Mohammad Ali Randhawa recently met with Saudi Ambassador Nawaf bin Said Ahmed Al-Malki at CDA headquarters to discuss the MoU and broader collaboration. According to a CDA statement, the meeting covered shared interests, including potential Saudi investment in Islamabad’s hotel sector.

The ambassador praised CDA’s efforts in urban development, beautification, and horticulture. He also acknowledged Islamabad’s emergence as a hub for green initiatives, noting the creation of a state-of-the-art nursery.

Both sides discussed preparations for Saudi National Day on September 23, with the CDA chairman assuring full support for the event. He welcomed Saudi investment and cultural cooperation, calling Islamabad a natural partner for future collaboration.

The federal government has taken a significant step to address climate challenges by launching the e-bike scheme 2025 across Pakistan.

The formal inauguration of the scheme is anticipated to be announced by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on August 14 during the Independence Day celebrations.

The initiative reflects the government’s commitment to a sustainable future and reducing dependence on fuel-based transportation.

Under the scheme, the government has allocated Rs9 billion in the current budget to support the rollout of electric bikes.

Each electric bike will be subsidized by Rs65,000, making them more accessible to the general public.

To ensure accessibility and transparency, the registration process for the electric bike scheme will be conducted online. In case the number of applicants exceeds the available quota, a balloting process will be carried out to select the beneficiaries.

The government aims to have at least 2 million electric bikes on roads by 2030. Additionally, the broader vision includes deploying 53,950 electric rickshaws, 99,155 electric cars, 2,238 electric buses, and 2,996 electric trucks.

The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has approved the construction of a new flyover on Azeempura Road to address traffic congestion and improve road connectivity.

According to officials, the proposed flyover will link Shahrah-i-Bhutto with Sharae Faisal, two of Karachi’s busiest roads. The new route is expected to ease travel, particularly for commuters heading towards Jinnah International Airport.

The structure will extend around 500 metres and is designed to provide a signal-free corridor, aiming to reduce travel times and manage the increasing volume of daily traffic. The decision was finalized during a meeting chaired by Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab, where the PC-1 of the project was discussed and approved.

The project has been allocated Rs. 1.4 billion and is expected to serve as an alternate route for residents, particularly amid development works on Shahrah-i-Bhutto.

Once the Planning and Development Board gives formal approval, construction is set to begin without delay. The flyover is expected to be completed within one year.
